Ta - at the risk of going off topic, I should have been in Greece now but Aegean cancelled my flight 4 days before departure. So chose to stay in BD 2 for 2 extra weeks. Bloody freezing

No there are no rules preventing B teams winning the trophy, their kids just aren’t good enough, or streetwise enough to get past a hard nosed EFL team who are up for the competition.

Dunno. We had number 10's who were midfield players and number 8's who were and also 8's as second striker and 10 as second striker. It's just a shirt number. Dirty Leeds had Clarke at 8 who was a striker and Giles at 10 who was a midfield player.

When I was a kid, before all those pesky foreigners started introducing fancy new formations, teams generally had two fullbacks, three halfbacks and five forwards. The forwards were numbered 7 - 11 from winger to winger. No 8 and no 10, between the centre forward and the wingers, were known as inside forwards.

 

Those were the days when a player signed he kept the shirt number as long as they performed, none of this squad numbers.

 

Broncs that cos we only had 12 shirts in total......

I'm nearly 65.
In the early/mid 60s all teams numbered in the traditional 2-3-5 manner. I certainly remember playing for my junior school team, which lined up that way (wearing our ankle high, hard toecapped, brown leather boots, with nailed in studs and long laces wrapped around the ankle and underneath). I was number 4 - a wingback - aka defensive midfielder.
In practice, most teams didn't play that way. The number 5 - centre half - dropped between the fullbacks to be a centre back, and the two inside forwards dropped deeper than the wingers and centre forward. But the numbers based on 2-3-5 continued long after everyone had switched to 4-2-4, 4-3-3 or 4-2-4.
