I for one can't wait for us to get a one in three target man again so we can spend every single post match thread (and every other single thread whether related or not) arguing whether one in three is enough given what else he brings to the team or whether it's pathetic because STRIKERS SCORE GOALS. People crowing when he scores, people crowing when he doesn't. Excellent, been sorely missed on this forum since Hanson left

Actually the wheels fell off well after Donaldson's injury. They fell off when Doyle came back. We picked up 43 points from 24 games until that point ! Perhaps had he not got rid of Doyle we might not have had the good start, and my memory was playing tricks, Doyle was just a bad apple. Looking at the results again, Bowyer being sacked was very harsh. 12 wins & 10 draws from 30 matches was very solid playoff form ! He can feel very hard done by.

Buying, signing, same thing, they aren’t playing for free are they? Whether it’s an upfront fee + salary or just salary, you’re still committing the club’s money for a period of the contract, the salary is paid monthly and any signing on or transfer fee is amortised over the duration of the contract.

I’d sooner recruit players who can develop in to a team like the McCall/Hendrie era, the 2012/13 team. Build a team and a squad around the younger players, the likes of Watt, Sutton, Cooke, POC, FCD. Scales, Sikora, Staunton, Crankshaw, Vernam and so on. For those who are a bit short sighted I’m not saying these are all league one players, some of them will certainly fall by the way side and won’t be good enough. But if you develop them, add some quality and experience to that, a Gary Jones, Gareth Whalley, add some goals and so on and I think you can build a team that will go places or if they do well they can be sold on.

The club has signed too many journeymen in the past with one purple patch in their career behind them, it’s signed too many ageing pros looking for one last contract, paid off players who aren’t good enough or want to move closer to home. It’s time to do something different.

But most metrics would suggest that last year we had strikers who could score goals - in Cook and Novak we had two of the league's better performers - we just didn't create enough chances for them (that's not saying they were perfect, because part of their job was to create those chances). Yes, we need someone who's going to convert them, but it's not the biggest thing we need to improve on from last year.

There's a lot to improve on from last year! I'd have Cook back in a heartbeat, then we need another 2 out and out forwards - I'd take Stockton and A.N. Other then 3 or 4 dangerous wingers to play outside them - can never have too many attackers

Update: bid rejected - weighing up a second offer.

We secured our second signing yesterday, however.

I agree Cook here for a full season he’d match 17 if not better it. No doubt. And he’s a free. Paying money for Matt would be Meh for me. It needs to be someone with some sell on value if he does score the goals

Investing our transfer budget into a player like Stockton or signing him for nothing is a different ball game and conversation.

Id prefer we bought players of a better quality but signing players for FREE who can improve the squad and give us options is fine for me. Stockton is low risk - there lies the difference in buying and signing.

Of course, the wage comes with it. Part and parcel of football and any signing.

McCall Hendrie era was 35 years ago. Football has changed.

Jamille Matt has been part of a few successful squads over the last few seasons. Hes seemed to feature in the playoffs over the last few years, has scored a fair few goals and is known to Adams. Its about the right blend as opposed to big names. I wouldn't be disappointed at all of hes one of the players we're targeting.

Exactly reading the Plymouth fan on the other thread he said that Plymouth were underwhelmed with some of his signings like Carey who went on to Dow well. It’s about finding the right players for the system we want to play and then getting the best out of them like he did with Stockton. As for Matt it’s pure speculation anyway

Weve been on a downward spiral for 25 years. And more recently 5/6 years. Patience has worn thin.

I think you are bang right Ulysses, I too will trust in Adams. I think a lot of contributors on here will probably need to prepare to be disappointed at some of the signings we will make but hopefully not the end result. He will sign players to do what he asks of them.
I think if he rates the likes of Callum Cooke, Ollie Crankshaw and Charles Vernham I think that we will a big improvement in their contribution and consistency.

And why should we be ? This is the khazi league. I'd take journey men for two/ three years to get us up and slowly build a team in League One capable of potentially competing in the Championship. What I won't take (and I suspect the majority agree) is years more in this league whilst we wait for our own talent to mature.
