Purple Nasty ? Half a Guinness, half a cider with a pernod & black thrown in. Makes a snakebite seem like lemonade

Yuk, still remember one of my workmates asking for a bitter and blackcurrant in the Salthorn, for a minute I thought Donald was going to deck him. He settled for refusing to serve him on account that he'd never do that to his beer.

From your (former) Belgian correspondent. I found both Duvel and Westmalle triple bottles in Morrisons. Both great beers, for very different reasons. One sharp blond, one full-bodied amber.
But: what's this? Neither have a sediment in the bottom of the bottle, like they should. Is this to cater for Brits who are not used to pouring the beer off the sediment, leaving the goo at the bottom of the bottle?

There are lots of breweries producing BCA in the UK, but it is a minority. Even then many also manufacture pasteurised and carbonated beer. Sadly most of the local breweries in West Yorkshire only sell ‘sparkling’ beer.
The Little Valley Brewery at Hebden Bridge has an extensive range of BCA and a couple of their products are available in Morrison’s on the 4 for £6 deal.

Problem as I see it is that the major industrial breweries have focused on lager, but what they all produce is something that is, as is said over here, like making love in a canoe*. Only without any of the enjoyable aspects of that activity. You have to go to the craft brewers everywhere, and some of the quality European/Germanic brewers, for the good stuff. Steigl and Ottakringer from Austria, for two personal favourites.

A pub in what was East Berlin will do nicely as well! Very nice draught Kölsch at the Sophien'eck.

Can't remember Duvel having sediment for a long time. I sell it here in Tallinn, and there's no sediment in the bottle, and pours clear. Interesting fact - that sediment (yeast) is still the original strain which was brought over from Scotland back in the 1920's! There's been a few instances of yeast being taken from one place to another. I can't remember which beer it is (its one of the early Czech lagers), but it's brewed from a strain of yeast, which was stolen by the owner when he was touring another brewery, and dipped his hankerchief into the fermenting vat and took it back to his brewery.
ps I've just had a shipment of the Duvel Tripel Hop Cashmere. Dangerous stuff!

I'm a former staunch ale drinker, so much so, that if I walked into a pub and there were no handpulls, I'd walk out. However, due to there being no cask ale over here in Estonia (yet), then I've had to modify my drinking preferences a bit. So much so, that I started importing a load of craft beer. Now that scene has fully taken off, you can't find a beer that doesn't hit you full in the face with hops. Sometimes its nice to taste the other ingredients. Due to that, I've often found myself just wanting a nice, clean lager to slake my thirst. I'm not talking Carlsberg, Heineken and those other mass market suds, but German and Czech lagers and Pilsners that have some provenance and taste. I went on a tour of the Pilsner Urquell factory, including the 10km of underground caves that they "lager" their beers in. In one of the caves, they give you a beer straight from the barrel. Unfiltered, unpasturised, "room temperature" (around 10c). Absolutely the best lager I've ever had. (yeah I know a Yorkshireman should have complained about the size of that head, but in this instance it all added to the experience). 192249972_2886258701702363_8739189793265325006_n.jpg

Even CAMRA have modified their approach because of some of the excellent 'craft' ales around in recent years.

And quite rightly so. Made in the same way, many not filtered or unpasturised and secondary ferment in the keg (as I know to my cost during hot weather!). They used to moan they are dispensed by gas, but this is not the case. All the craft kegs I use in my bar, are dispensed using pressurised air - the same way you get BIB wine out of the box. It just squeezes it up the lines and is naturally carbonated without any additional CO2 added. Camra need to move with the times. If they had it their way, they'd throw any beer of the list if it wasn't still in coopered wooden barrels!

All went down hill for the big northern hand-pull bitter names after the Health and Safety brigade killed the autovat system (although Bradford kept onto it for a bit longer than most), and the then rise of the conglomerates and their push for profits by changing the drinking habits of the next generation, and more cheaply mass produce and market lager to them (remember - stick lemons in the bottle neck, look like Marlboro man posing at the bar etc?).

And can you still get babycham for the ladies? I think not.

Autovac is still available in many pubs. Ling Bob, Lord Clyde both have it. They just have to use a fresh glass.

That's a very sexist comment re Babycham.

Real men are known to drink 'Cham as well. Ask @Hoochy-Min@Hoochy-Min. He likes nothing better than a fizzy Skolcham on a hot summer's day - 50:50 Babycham with his favourite lager served in a pint glass with ice. :)
