Match Thread Away V Carlisle Saturday 13th March 3.00pm

Newports equaliser , which changed the game, Andy Cook must have blown really hard in their players ear to make him fresh air kick, like he did. Just not been our week .

 

Yep and despite our ills today, Carlisle played well for an hour and took the game away from us. They did all the things we were doing in recent times... Press, shape, movement and correct attitude

 

Front foot football. It was good stuff. I'd like us to play that way and there's no reason we can't, as I think we have better players. Today was a wake up call.

 

Without that solid defence of ours or relying on an opposition mistake the stats show we don't offer enough in the go forward department. If Evans or Cranshaw take what were very good chances then we are looking at a different ball game, we go in at half time level or infront and Carlisle have the same mindset that has seen their form fall off a cliff. Football is fine margins and today the luck we've been riding ran out. Thats football.

 

If we lose at home next week,he could blame the valley parade pitch for a excuse

 

No the weather doesn't have an effect on every game and I agree it was not the sole reason we lost, but it played a factor in why we were pinned in for long spells in the first half allowing the pressure to be kept on us. Even their commentary mentioned it a few times.

 

What’s the question? Calum Guy was very decent today put himself about and our midfield was crap. I wasn’t saying Calum Guy should be in our team.

 

Ah OK, fair enough.

 

Why all this love in for Callum Guy? Carlisle have been terrible recently. In fact they only managed a point against Grimsby, bottom of the league, in the 93rd minute on Tuesday. Yes, he played well today but that was more because we allowed him to. We were poor in that area of the pitch. If he was that good they probably would still have been top. But they're not.

That's the curious thing. We're not 'playing well' but we're getting chances. Even today, we deserved the loss but we still had the better chances. So frustrating because if we click and get some cohesion going, we'd be hard to stop. But are we set up to impose ourselves and play on the front foot, or set up to play pragmatically with a low block of 6? To me, its clearly the latter. And we need to grow bigger balls.

 

To be fair the wind was still there, we just chose to wait till the end to use it. When we did use it Carlisle were all over the place, only our pathetic finishing stopped us getting anything. Hornby had little do second half bar picking the ball out of the net once.

Give you that, Roger. But not as in the first half, but hey we were poor either way!

 

Normally we don't create much but our defensive structure looks solid. I didn't think we'd win today, our forward momentum has stalled somewhat, even our goal against Newport was defensive howler. Its normally that back three that keeps us in games, Wood has looked off the boil for months. Today was the first time it failed us. That front six needs to stand up to be counted now, the defence has stood up for long enough.

 

I can't remember the last time I saw a game where the weather didn't have an effect on the game. I think assuming the weather or officials to be a primary factor in our result today is to absolve ourselves of the responsibility of our own performance, which for every player on the pitch and for those on the bench, wasn't good enough

 

Yeah to be fair we didn't deserve anything, although i didn't think Carlisle were anything special. Poor quality game despite the two carlisle commentators jerking themselves off.

I think the free midweek has come at a good time. A bit of a rest and some training time. There's much to work on, so let's see if we do.

All about next season for me. There's still a lot to improve on.
