And what do virtually all of those clubs have in common? They owned their own stadiums before new buyers or additional investment came in. Us?

What to me would show real commitment from our owner - and it would ultimately I think be sound financial sense for him - would be to do a deal with Gordon Gibb and buy back Valley Parade. We could then upgrade and develop the ground in whatever way the owner and management see fit, re-develop other commercial opportunities that just pay into Bradford City and stop paying extortionate rent. If Rupp is determined to stay with us for the long haul, great. Everyone benefits. Or if he wants to offload, he has then got a proper ongoing financial asset. This is exactly why the Allam family can't sell Hull City. No stadium - no market.

To judge Rupp at the minute I have to put myself in his situation.

If I'd been swindled into investing into a 3rd division German team based on the prospect of making a profit in a sport I didn't care about, but it then turned out that things were tougher than it seemed, my new partner was a crook and I'd have to pump more money in.

    Would I have stuck around.

    Absolutely not.

And I know people will say that he would have had to write off some or all of his investment to do this but that's the same with all investments.

To that extent does he deserve credit for his part in the turnaround so far? 100% yes. Is there more to do? Definitely. No harm in acknowledging the trust he seems to have put in the right people once he got to grips with everything and yhe loyalty and support he's shown so far.

I think you lay out the situation really well here Aaron. And for goodness sake, let's look forward.

Everybody is looking forward, just some choose not to get all misty eyed over an owner who could have pissed off into the sunset but in doing so would have lost the lot. He's hanging round for his benefit as well as anyone elses, lets face it the club was worth next to nothing when 91st in the football league. A small investment in the squad in January has seen to it the club will be a far better position to sell if indeed he does ever want to leave.

And therein lies the rub. We’ll never know whether his recent input is fuelled by a sense of honour or by self interest.

Leeds, Burnley, Everton, Liverpool. Premier League. Burnley are paying for their own takeover, the owners aren’t. The Premier League is riding high on the back of TV deals, there is serious money to be spent and made. Mostly American money piling in these days.

Sunderland, big stadium that they own. Will be full each week when they’re in the top half of the championship. Owner worth billions.

Charlton, they’re still arguing over who actually owns the club, takeover started before the pandemic. Own their ground in London. American money.

Wigan have been on the verge of being bought for months. Own their stadium which also has another tenant paying the bills.

Wrexham, American money again. Own their stadium.

That’s five deals in the past year. A report says nearly half the championship clubs are up for sale. It’s not a time to be selling a lower league football club with few assets and expecting top dollar.

Sadly it would not have been extortionate rent if Julian had a little forward thinking and taken Gibbs offer of the going rate for the league were in.

First of all we have to remember Rupp may not actually be that interested. I suspect he is super naffed off with Rahic, but although he is not one of the mega-rich elite, the money he put up up for the Club is pin money in comparison to his capital and turnover: a foray into a sport he knows nothing about, and a talking point at dinner parties in the circles he moves in. An alternative to a depreciating £10m Cruiser and a few £100k per year mooring and crew fees at Palma de Mallorca Yacht Club.

Saying this I do not think he will knowingly do anything harmful and he will keep the Club topped up now and again, but to what extent and what for will depend on who is talking to him.

Like all of us I hope for a different future, and I hope that due diligence is pursued when there is a potential buy-out, and the new owner(s) meet the expectations of all of us.

I think we have gone beyond this. The ground is owned by a pension company. This is apparently Flamingo Land, so not owned by GG in person. There will be a lot of regulations and rules as to what can be done with this asset. It is not as simple as dealing with an individual.

Not sure why people still have a problem with Rupp, and to think he's as much to blame for our downfall as Rahic was?Granted he's very hands off, but clearly that's what he signed up for. At the end of the day he's trusting the CEO to run the club properly with the money he's putting in, which he should expect at the very least. He wasn't complicit with what Rahic did in my opinion because Rahic kept him cut off. The way i see it Rupp has consistently supported the club financially and kept us going through difficult times when he could have taken off and think he deserves credit. He showed the same support to Sparks and co just as he did Rahic, their respective successes and failures can't be pinned directly to Rupp. Fans still want Rupp to leave but how on earth is that going to help he club unless we get someone with much more money in which isn't going to happen?

If you're not sure, consider where we were when Rupp bought the club, then consider where we are now.

Spot on Rod. I went through this many moons ago and you're right. Trustees of Pension Funds have onerous obligations placed on them in Law. If they abuse or fail in those obligations it can result in a custodial sentence.
Sorry Broncs your comment on a rent deal is incorrect and Park and Tony are right, it was the other way round which the Pension Fund rejected for the reasons I've just given.

By that same rule, a new owner could take us from where we are now and then we find ourselves in the National League. There are no guarantees. Better the devil we know.

By the way, what exactly would you expect a new owner to be doing differently and how much would your dream cost?

Good post he has said he wants to get us back to the time he and Rahic took over, unfortunately that could be a decade by the time that is achieved if ever, but yes he's stood by us and all the things I been told about him he's a stand up honest man.
I think what the majority of City fans can't understand is he built a very good business in Germany which he sold and is involvement in another business classic cars, yachts, houses as well as his racing team, the man is no fool by any means, but as we know Rahic was introduced by a third party, he'd never met the man before, Rahic had little money of his own to invest (some one posted he actually borrowed his investment from Stefan) so its very difficult not to lay some of the blame at Stefan's door, I can't understand how he allowed Rahic free rein without having his accountants check the books at least annually.
Now if Rahic cooked the books and covered his tracks surely that's fraud and a criminal offence, did he not prosecute because of the publicity it would generate both here and of course back home in Germany where the German press were happy to cover their success, lets hope he's as good as his word and I'm wrong with my decade comment.
