You are channeling ‘normal’ life in a direction which we’ve experienced in the last year where people don’t have to leave their front rooms. It’s bullshit and should not become the norm.

Its another debate but maybe low attendances at VP when a big game is on telly is down to the cheap season tickets attracting more casual fans. Maybe it's just me, but I doubt many on this board would miss a City game to watch CL on telly

Despite the best efforts of this government to lock everything down forever, we will be back to some normality in the future. And that means access to away grounds. Without fully repeating myself it will hardly effect the away support numbers, these are the loyal fans who go regardless of any ifollow options. But waht new technology like ifollow does do is open up the game to an audience who for various reasons only have the option of a radio at best. We live in the 21st century, its about time we used that technology to its advantage rather than living in the dark ages.

Maybe you’re right about the casual and cheap element of our fanbase

I agree to a certain degree and I’ve used ifollow several times in the past where I’ve been unable to attend a game.
We just need to be careful to avoid ifollow being a choice rather than a necessity

There are various reasons why midweek games are watched by less numbers, longer travel times, people finishing work, the weather, young families bed times, people working shifts etc. There are times when i get home from a hard day at work and think can i really be bothered driving through rush hour traffic to get to VP.

Your right, it does have to be implemented correctly but the positives of being able to enjoy watching live, even on TV, far outweigh the negatives. And to be fair from my point of view, i much prefer live away games than home games so my use of it would be minimal. Because to be honest, watching football at home on TV is in no way a substitute for actually being there.

For a long journey, Exeter or a London club away mid week, or a big ground, say Sunderland or MK Dons in League One, Wigan when the come down, the away end isn’t going to be sold out.

Nothing can replace being in the stadium, but life is very different to years ago when almost everybody worked 9-5, you gave your pay envelope to your wife every Friday, women stayed at home and looked after the kids and you were born, worked, lived and died within your own town or City. Football has to get with the times, those who buy a season ticket for £150 aren’t going to be put off going to home games on a Saturday and the odd away game when they can, but they might well pay an extra £250 to watch mid week games and more away games on TV, that’s £250 the game isn’t going to get otherwise.

I’d like to see some hard evidence for attendances dipping when the CL is on and that the CL is the sole cause. I’m a City fan, the CL final could be free on telly and I could be given £50 and all the ale I can drink to watch it and I’d still rather pay to watch City. Mid week games in general have lower attendances because people have other commitments, they’re working, kids, early start in the morning, long journey to get there and in winter it’s colder, I’m sure of that.

Have you seen one post saying 'If ifollow continues to be available after Covid, I am never stepping foot inside Valley Parade again'? No, you haven't because that would never happen. Likewise, it won't impact negatively on away followings; those that enjoy the whole experience of an away day will continue to do so.

Absolutely agree. I mentioned the phrase "Turkeys voting for Christmas" earlier in the thread and that's exactly what this is.

People like Big Rod can throw about the luddite insult all he wants but look to the future, say 10 years from now when, if he got his way, all matches are available, live on TV. The local casual football fan then has a choice of watching Man Utd vs Liverpool, a Leeds game or even Huddersfield vs Sheff Wed.

How on earth would we persuade anyone to watch City at home to Barrow instead of those games? Whereas if football on TV is as restricted as possible there's always the chance we can tempt these people to VP to experience live football which beats the TV experience hands down. Or it should do, unless everyone's crowds half because its a "bit cold outside" and the progressive thinkers decide they'd rather sit on the couch drinking obscure poncey ales instead.

I can understand watching the likes of Exeter v City where it's only the real die hard travelling but not for an away game at Oldham or Harrogate nothing better than attending games and the great atmosphere created, especially when we take 3,000 to away games.

You're completely missing the point. This isn't about you, or any other fan of a club, they're already committed. This is about clubs attracting fans in the future, young kids or those that aren't committed yet and what you're all suggesting makes this night on impossible for clubs unless the said person already has a family connection.

Completely disagree. If its an available stream it'll be on in the local boozers and a good number will spend the £50 having a few beers with mates and watching the game there rather than spend 4 hours on a return journey to Walsall.

I would have it as a bolt on extra say the price of a ticket with say £50 for I follow. If possible an away I follow season ticket would be great

You obviously don't go to away games.

Aye, I've only the 80 odd different grounds on my list.

It's not about me or you though, some will probably go no matter what but there's plenty who would take the pub option if it was available and especially on the longer trips whereas if it wasn't streamed these people would probably make the effort instead.

Only 80??? I’m on 89, need Forest Green, Barrow and Harrogate for the set. Covid has well and truly screwed me!!

I think we agree though, it’s great for even the die hards like us to have the option to watch the game on TV when absolutely needed but the worry is too many would watch on TV in the pub as their preferred choice as that would eventually kill the game with kids never been taken to games by their dads.

80 odd but I'm including a lot of clubs twice if I've been to old and new grounds.

Strangely enough, the PL grounds are the biggest gap for me. I was pretty lethargic with the away games in those days, preferring instead to watch Soccer Saturday and the live games in the pub instead. Probably a mixture of cost and perceived ticket availability as I always travelled with a group of mates.

To be fair, if we are still playing the likes of Barrow in league 2 in 10 years time, we probably deserve to be losing out to the casual fan choosing to watch a different game on tv.
