We were a possession based team who didn’t really have an out and out goal scorer until January and played 1 up top but were always in the hunt for autos. Our possession which came through them 3 also allowed a very average CB pairing in that time in Vincelot and NKP to have one of the best defensive records in the league. Add in to the fact Clarke was nominated for player of the month losing out to Billy Sharp, and results dipping when he was out in December and it all makes that trio pretty vital to how we played that season.

 

The Vaughan I saw miss from a yard or so out at Macclesfield isn’t the player he was or maybe we think he is. I’m not sure it’s not that bad a decision if he leaves. Admittedly Kurtis the chief hardly gets the pulse racing. Got to trust in McCall and got to bring in Someone the fans can get behind. Donaldson and Clarke have bags of experience. Need a pacey marksman type.

While I heartily support healthy criticism, and even scepticism at times, there has to be a point where someone receives the benefit of the doubt. How else is anyone able to healthily atone for and learn from mistakes? However, it's not always easy or even possible for those who feel attacked to forgive and forget and it must be their own decision to make, do you not think?

I feel that although our leadership hierarchy is piss poor and will keep us in this division for the next 10 years unless it changes, our scouting department is non-existent and I do wonder if that's because of funding or pure mismanagement.

Splashing the cash didn't work for Rahic when he signed Akpan, Scannell and the like on big wages, we even increased spending to keep Jack Payne on loan, resulting in a great season where we finished dead last. Recruiting the right characters is far better than praying some unmotivated division drop-down will perform just because you pay him enough.

Our first team recruitment is shocking, especially compared to our youth recruitment which is essentially volunteer. Do we even have a scouting system in place for the first team? How do we scout for the first team? Rahic relied on YouTube .Bowyer relied on the discard pile. McCall relies on Facebook. It's not even like we have a style of player we aim for. Teams like Peterborough aim for creative attacking football. We pay and pray.

TLDR: crap 1st team recruitment. What's our scouting system for the first team? We need answers.

I personally think there is more of an emphasis placed on contacts through agents than actual scouting for players. I hope it's not seen as unnecessary expenditure because sourcing and development of players is vital if budgets are reduced imo.Mind you, our record in this has been a bit hit and miss, but when it pays off there are very welcome financial gains for the Club... providing revenue streams which are and have been, a life-line for us. So ignore youth at our peril.

 

The players currently contracted take up a big part of the budget. We are, rightly or wrongly, budgeting for a salary cap. The lad is willing to come and has had offers from league 1 from what i'm led to believe. I think you'll see us bring in players as late as possible, try and pick up ones who were holding out for more money but have left it too late.

You make a fair analysis but previously stated that three players were "vital" and have now named another two and have cited two elements - possession and clean sheets. From your comments it's hard to interpret what led us to a strong position - was it the clean sheets or possession approach - and therefore which of the five players you've named was vital, unless you're saying everything was vital which is stretching the meaning of the word somewhat. May as well add in the effect of the strong attendances on home form too as being vital. So everything was vital.
