how does the NHS manage to overspend by £13.4bn, and this isn’t all(if any) extra costs from CV19. It is like schools with massive debt, eg Hanson.

They have a budget given and that should be it. If they can not function correctly on that budget then the discussion should be had why if other can not just let to run up massive debt

Its debt owed to the government by the government. They do not have the correct budget. 13.4 billion over is quite clear of that

and so that should be discussed at the time rather than just letting the ‘debt’ build. If it was nationwide I’d understand more, but when only some hospitals/schools it looks like bad management

It’s a penal system and quite frankly a joke. If a trust runs over they are then punished and expected to pay it back the following year. If it didn’t the penalties were compounded. It’s all numbers on a computer and needs the reforms of 2012 removing as they are a shambles

    How would that work?

'Sorry Storcker m8, we can't treat you after your accident because we're out of dough. Come back in financial year 21/22 and we'll see what we can do.'

something similar but obviously more forward planning.

it is same with some schools. Hanson has built an overspend up of a few million, getting bigger each year.

no, it still hasn’t happened. And when it does the debt stays with the council rather than transfer with the school so they don’t care as they are spending someone else’s money

Not all NHS trusts have similar clientele. Areas with high social deprivation and/or lots of older people will have more demands on NHS services than more affluent areas. Do you really think that central government budget allocations accurately reflect those differences? Of course not. Just like local authorities in southern England have much more generous budget allocations than northern ones, despite most of them having richer, less needy populations.
The whole ridiculous 'internal market' concept in the NHS is a joke, introduced by the Tories, made worse by Blair & Brown and made worse again by Andrew Lansley's 2012 changes. It needs scrapping and replacing with proper planning, not faux commercial market rules spawning armies of unnecessary commissioners and finance managers who add nothing to the purpose of the organisation, but billions to its costs.
Instead of that we're seeing yet more privatisation and fragmentation, under cover of the pandemic, by a government that really wants US style private healthcare but knows it can't sell that to the public, so is doing it by stealth.

What a sick joke this is. The very definition of shutting the stable door after the horse has bolted. We've let every infected Tom, Dick and Harriet into the country without checks for the last four months, when we should have shut the borders. But now that most of the rest of the world has lower infection rates than us we impose 14 day quarantine. You really couldn't make it up.

This is how you do it properly.
Now, obviously we aren't a communist country so we couldn't get away with imposing all the restrictions that Vietnam did. But we surely could have learned lessons from them, couldn't we? We have Foreign Office staff there, and in South Korea, and Greece, and Germany, and all the other countries that have handled the pandemic immeasurably better than us. And we had more notice than most of them. So how come we weren't getting advice from our people in those countries as to what was working well and emulating it? Because we have a bunch of lazy, arrogant, incompetent tossers instead of a properly functioning government, that's why.

I for one hope we stick firmly to the 14 days quarantine for at least a few months.

Yes, I agree the we should have shut our boarders straight away and we left it far too late but when need to control this virus and we can't have people flying all over then coming back with the virus.

It's one summer(hopefully) lets get the UK hospitality back up and running, get people spending in the Uk and then come September if everything is good still look at it.

Think government is proving far too weak! stand firm like Australia and just say no! Boarders closed!

Haven't you got it yet? The Prof Fordy advice applies not just to boarders but also to lodgers, sofa surfers, overnight bessie mates and anybody else in a similar situation. Even your mate will get caught in Fordy's net. Got it now? ;)

yes. There isn’t a bottomless pit of money for anything. Yes difficult decisions have to made about what is and isn’t a priority for the NHS.

surely everyone can see that. Or do you actually think the NHS should provide every medication going, every new treatment, every medical procedure ? There has to be limits.

And on my other example of schools definitely. They have their budget at the start of the year from entry figures, yes there can be some fluctuations but not massively. And yet some schools build up deficit year on year.

Woah why have you jumped to that extreme? About every medication and every treatment is worthwhile?

never talked about that. The point here which you seem to be missing is this debt that is not true debt. It’s money that the government owes itself. Usually If a trust overspends they are penalised and usually never catch up and are punished for it. It isn’t true debt like you seem to think.

Of course everything has a limit. No one is denying that.
