Set to be named Sunderland manager anytime soon.

 

Good luck to Parky at Sunderland. Great appointment for him. Cannot imagine the Mackems being overly happy with the appointment though

 

They'll hate him. They expect entertainment and they're going to get the polar opposite. Sunderland Twitter have already turned on him before signing on the dotted line. He'll need a good start or it could be a troubled stint. Got a big centre forward in Wyke and some good footballers in Maguire, McGeady and McNulty around him. Will be interesting to see the fans reaction post xmas.

 

Parky is a shrewd man he had Rahic correctly summed up in just one meeting
He wouldn't take the Sunderland job if he thought he couldn't get them promotion
and a club that size deserves better than what they already have
Yes their fans demand attractive attacking football "something they won't get with him" they also demand success and if he gets them promoted that would suffice
However whether Parky can hold his own or succeed in the championship is another matter

I don't think this is a good appointment for a club of Sunderland's stature. Parky is a good manager for clubs who are in crisis where he can go in and try to repair a club and somewhere he and his style of football will be afforded more time and patience by the fans because of whatever is going on in the background. Sunderland don't only need to go up this season but really need to be aiming for promotion to the premier league quite soon, something I don't think Parky's style of football will allow. If it's a short term appointment just to get them out of league one then I think he'll probably do fine.

Sunderland fans' main gripe with Jack Ross was that he was defensive and negative, so you can't imagine Parky will be afforded much patience if the results aren't instant.

But good luck to him, he gave me the best memories ever supporting this club.

 

Class appointment for a team which are failing to much. £4M Will Grigg etc - He will get best out of that squad and take them up to the Championship.

Echo a lot of the thoughts above (except Ricc), I wish him good luck. Gave us some memories that will be talked about long after I'm gone.
Sure the mackems will be happy with him if he gets them up to Championship whatever his chosen playing style. But as JButterfield said elsewhere, maybe Championship struggles will see him fired sharpish.
Anyway, I hope they don't go up this time, then we'll have a couple of cracking fixtures next season.

 

Sunderland fans are living in the past expecting a "big name" managerial appointment. Phil Parkinson has proved he can manage successfully at 3rd division level.

If Parky gets the Mackems out of league 1 they won't care how he gets them promoted, they are still a big club compared with us, all the best Parky.

 

Always love it when people declare that such and such fans demand/expect attacking, entertaining football (e.g. West Ham or Newcastle or Sunderland). Surely all fans want attacking and entertaining football, it’s such a ridiculous comment.

The fact is though that a lot of teams don’t have the quality to do it so sometimes you have to compromise. I’m sure most fans would take success under Parky rather than mediocrity playing lovely attacking football without the results to match. Ross was unpopular because he didn’t get results, his style of football is secondary to that (as with all managers).

 

Ive been stewing over this for a few hours now (maybe because i had a bet on stendel to take the job instead!)

But i realise it does make sense, instead of throwing a season away to get a manger to get the players to adapt to his style he has gone for a manger with similar tactics and a proven record in L1. On a personal note i am quite happy for him as he left us on a bad note and had such a rough time at bolton. He must be so pleased hes managing a large club.

Genuinely wish him and Sunderland all the best.
