    Now then... I don't want to get into any arguments or fall out with anyone but my post on the Bulgarian racist thread was removed because of a word.....
    I would like to know please...
    How should my post have been phrased to have been acceptable because it was a perfectly valid post?

    "According to the British Sociological Association, there are other words and phrases used to describe race, skin colour and heritage which could be found offensive however.

    "Halfe-caste" is a "dated, racist term which should be avoided", they explain.

    "Mixed race is a misleading term since it implies that a 'pure race' exists."

    They advise alternatives including "mixed parentage" and "dual heritage".

    Anyone ever heard of anyone described as "dual heritage" or "mixed parentage"?

    What's offensive these days is usually pretty fluid and it's no wonder people of an older generation who don't use as much social media or the internet in general struggle to keep up.

    What's perfectly acceptable one day simply might not be the next and in the age of the ultra offended this seems to apply to all aspects of life. Then, because it's so sensitized people shy away from discussing it and in turn remain uneducated of the reasons why it potentially may be offensive in the first place.

    I'm not really sure what point I'm making here apart from its such a shame society is where it is today where an ever growing section of people are generally look for offense (usually for someone else) at the earliest opportunity and in turn shut down the communication that could greatly benefit everyone.

    OK. I'll speak on behalf of the site's mods.

    Use of the word 'coloured' to describe a person of afro-caribbean heritage is widely regarded as offensive these days. Better to use the word 'black' which doesn't have the connotations attached to 'coloured'. I think that the link which @Storck@Storck provided describes it as well as anything.

    Does that help with your understanding?

    I typed black before coloured and changed it because I didn't want to offend.... shows just how bloody carefully you have to tresd nowadays.

    Just to point out the article I posted is almost 5 years old, so it isn’t something that has changed overnight.

    I think we had the same discussion on C&B when it was used on there, but am not 100%

    It gets worse because it can change by country as well. In America many see being called Black as being offensive with them preferring African-American or Person of Colour (although there is a growing movement to stop using PoC)

    And then you can have terms that used to be common, that became offensive only to then acceptable again. Take Queer for example, it used to be the accepted term before being declared offensive and while it still largely is seen as offensive in the U.K. its back to being the accepted term in the US. You generally won't find articles that refer to someone as say 'gay actor' it will be 'queer actor' with gay being deemed more derogatory these days.

    And in a Spanish speaking country referring to a black person negro can be fine because it’s the Spanish word for Black (and it’s where the English term came from)

    I always feel it’s context that should be looked at more than the word itself because with so many cultures and the ever evolving nature of acceptable words (especially with The outrage culture we currently have) its just a minefield when it’s just done on the words themselves

    Black has been the preferred term in this country for decades. I'm quite surprised that anyone would still baulk at using it for fear of giving offence. I'm not doubting your word, I just find it surprising, given that black is such a commonly used term these days.
    Examples include MOBO Awards ( music of black origin); BAME (Black & Minority Ethnic); Black Power (dating from the 60s); numerous hit records, eg Say it Loud, I'm Black & I'm Proud, Young Gifted and Black, Black Pearl, Black Betty, just off the top of my head.
    It's a very long while since Black was considered offensive.
