Reading this thread i have seen some good points but some are a bit naive, these people being racist and they know its a bad thing. During the game around 50 fans were ejected for nazi salutes and monkey chanting. I would say 80% werent being racist.

For me i think expulsions from tournaments are required if this carries on. Fines are not harsh enough.

How does having racist fanbases in tournaments help?

Like i said previously its nievity thats the problem. It sounds like you think these people need to be coached in how to behave or that they dont know any better and i strongly disagree. In the UK hooliganism had incredibly harsh sentences for being involved and after some decades its reduced dramatically.

In both situations they know EXACTLY what they are doing.

There is no current real incentive to change the behaviour.

How is it fair on the vast majority of fans to be kicked out of a tournament for the behaviour of the minority?

I agree but bring that scenario back to our club Bradford City, someone posted ( I think they said Crawley) charge more to clubs that have an element of fans who take more policing, that will impinge on all traveling City fans if that is the case.

Agree with one or two others, pot calling kettle black IMO and appearing some sort of compettion with a "I'm not as racist as you" trophy for the winners!

The English FA it's manager & some players sound plain daft to me & need a dose of reality out of their super rich bubbles. AFAIK not one of them made any big deal about Gus Mafuta suffering apalling racist abuse from his own fans at Hartlepool the other week.

The FA rep who was interviewed on ITV made specific references to Hartlepool and Congleton and other incidents week in week out in our own pyramid. I thought he came across really well only to see him slated on social media.

No body has denied there is a big problem in this country either, doesn’t mean you can’t comment or should have to tolerate it when you travel abroad for a football match. English football always has this topic on hot discussion, and organisations like Kick it Out trying to find solutions.

I think people would be interested to know what the Bulgarian FA’s plans are to try come up with a solution. Because if their managers pre match comments are anything to go by probably just try get away with it best they can and put it back under the rug.

Not sure why they been rich is relevant. Should people with wealth have to suffer abuse?

I don't know the answer to resolve what happens sometimes in places like Bulgaria but it would seem to me that banning them from international competition only reduces exposure to black athletes and role models even further which surely can only help certain sections to retain the current mentality.

Integration and exposure is the key and as young Eastern Europeans grow up idolising the black footballers they are watching from the stands it begins to help stamp out racism from the inside.

Clearly a much more instant impact should also be targeted but isolating countries will, imo, only have the opposite effect to the target FIFA are trying to achieve.

He's also stated that he heard no racist chanting or noises during the game which is bemusing given his captain's actions and the announcements.

Surely statements like his can only underline and strengthen the belief in current attitudes from sections of the crowd.

The comments of the Bulgarian manager reported after the game were beyond belief!

I don't know what is the best way forward on this issue. There were very few Bulgarian fans in the stadium as a punishment for previous incidents but that didn't put a stop to the racist chants and the straight arm salutes. If UEFA and the Bulgarian FA want to make a stand and draw a line in the sand, I'd start by sacking the manager because of his post-match comments and who did nothing to distance himself from the fans' racist behaviour. I'd argue that he condoned the fans' behaviour. It might be regarded as unfair in some quarters but a strong point has to be made by the Bulgarians.

The Bulgarian PM has told the head of Bulgarian football to quit. Like you I don’t know the answer, but it’s a good place to start from the top down I’d say.

Of course not but nor should a non-rich ones either. So my point was, a much worse case of racism, upfront, close up, could turn actually physical event, in England, gets a bit of publicity then is forgotten. When an entirely predictable, given the prior days stupid "Make our day" media coverage, gets wildy disproportionate coverage and will achieve not very much at all.

You're very quick to criticise the actions but extremely slow to suggest an alternative course of action. What do you think should have happened?

You mentioned rich bubble. Of course nobody should have to suffer abuse, wealth doesn’t need to come into it. Also worth nothing that plenty of black footballers came from poorer backgrounds, and I’m sure some suffered racist abuse back then as well.

I agree on the publicity front, both incidents should get coverage it’s the only chance of spreading the message that abuse shouldn’t be tolerated.

Have I heard correctly today that England are being charged for our fans disrupting the Bulgarian national anthem?

The Bulgarian keeper said he thought that their fans were well behaved and that England players over reacted.

Therin lies the problem with some of the East Europeans. They dont actually think its a problem making monkey noises and chanting at black players. They seem to think it is actually acceptable

The Congleton incident refers to a North West Counties League match between Congleton Town and Padiham. A report on the incident can be found here Non-league Padiham FC fined for leaving pitch in protest at racist abuse here.

Before our football authorities try to take any high ground, perhaps someone should ask them why they punished the victims, Padiham, in similar circumstances. Oh, and I suspect a few will remember the Donovan Ricketts red card as well (https://www.wsc.co.uk/the-archive/104-Race/1405-red-card-for-abuse).

Our football authorities have still not got their act together. The incident in Bulgaria needs to be a wake up call, and a line in the sand, for all.
