I’ll give you the first 3 examples, but even then, Sheff Utd lost 1-0 at league runners-up (Bolton) and Luton narrowly lost 1-0 at 4th placed Pompey. That said, I take your point all the same.

But I think you’ve lost the point totally with your next set of examples. How can you compare the situation to something that hasn’t yet happened...!

This is true mate, but do we need to play 2 out and out wingers? When Reid was tearing up the left, we tended to have McMahon on the right. When Marshall was causing damage down our left, we used Law on the right.

For me, if we play Scannell as the out and out winger and our main outlet, there is no reason why someone like Gibson or Wood can’t occupy the left side and come inside to support when needed.

Good point although i’m yet to be persuaded that Scannell will be the player everyone is expecting. I’ll wait till he’s had a good run before writing him off in my head. Wood isn’t an out and out winger but does have a good cross on him and could be an option. Still waiting to see what the lad from Walsall (i forget his name) has to offer.

    It's one game!

If 4 3 3 is his preferred formation then we won't have to worry about any wingers.

Even Bowyer will not play the rest of this seasons games with a 4-3-3 formation, hence the need for wingers.

Because they are expected to be up there in their respective leagues, Cardiff and Fulham had bad results against two of the favourites for relegation. The point is it’s the opening day, these results are a common occurrence. Even a journalist the other day said he’d rather pick the lotto than predict the opening day.

Still all that doesn’t excuse a poor second half performance, which I don’t think anyone is defending. It was a game which had more negative ms than positives, but positives were there mainly in the first half. Couple of more players needed no doubt about that.

We're not devoid of options that is one of the options. We changed it when Devine came on and I'd guess we might change it when/if McCarten returns too. Just because we played a certain way in 1 game, the 1st game with all these new players it doesn't mean we will stick with it.

It shouldn’t even be an option, i don’t want to see square pegs in round holes, i’ve had enough of that for 18 months.

To a certain degree I agree with you but it's an option, may be he's playing Doyle in a way to show agents/managers that he's playing and available? But I wouldn't want to see Doyle in that role for many more games.

So game 1 is done and the result - although not a disaster - did not meet many people's expectations - my own included. Tinge of dissapointmnet? Absolutely, but it was also far from complete panic stations!

I think many need to pause for a second and take a step back and not let the emotion of this performance run away with them. The first game is not a true indicator of how well a team is likely to perform over the season so don't look too deeply into it.

A balanced judgement is needed right now. We start the season on the back of relegation with many of the underachievers still on the books. However, Bowyer is beginning to mould the squad in his own vision but he admits it is not there yet. We need to remain mindful of this. No matter how underwhelming Saturday was it was still a solid performance. The speed of play was lacking and we were too narrow - especially against 10 men. However, we never looked troubled. Yes the bench looked weak but there is still time to bring a couple more in and there are those out injured to come back.

We will be stronger both from a squad perspective and from the experience. This is likely to be how a lot of teams are going to set up against us, especially at Valley Parade. Hopefully Bowyer and the players have learnt a lot from this.

Can't help thinking that shape is being set up with Shay in mind. Gibson would be good there too. Still think we need width though and just play a 442.

I think he decided to play that formation just to wind @Fordy117@Fordy117 up

Totally agree. We also don't know what Ismail is like yet too. We have the options and I'm sure that we will change shape and formation dependant on the game/opposition.

Problem with doing that is, though it’s great for the first few games, teams will quickly find us out. Look what happened with Jack Payne when it was discovered by opposition teams that he was the focal point of our attacks. Two players on him all game and we resort to hoofball up to Doyle (groan).

Although I called Gibson out on his Hollywood passing on Saturday, having someone who can switch the play to either wing, is a great benefit. IF there’s two wingers on the pitch.

Defenders in this league aren’t the most mobile or position savvy. Stretching the play by using both wings either to get crosses in, or pulling fullbacks out of position is a great weapon.

442 for me all day long. Bringing in another winger and centre mid is a must.

Prior to Cambridge game, my assessment of where the current squad will finish is 12th.

Although the hype around automatics may be exaggerated, I really struggle to see 11 squads who are better on paper than ours like you suggest.

It’s a shame that football is played on grass and not paper then. Having a better squad means zilch. I’m sure our squad from last season wasn’t the worst, yet it finished bottom by a distance.
