Nobody is saying that Drury is his first choice, but just maybe he has got to know him and is ok. I really don’t see why we are having this pointless debate. He has made his decision based on the current circumstances. I cannot for the life of me see why every man his dog is sticking their lip out over this decision. We have had nothing but positives vibes and signings coming out of VP since the end of last season. As I have already said when or if he changes his mind, or our financial situation changes then he will bring whoever he wants. He signed a contract recently, and he hasn’t made it part of his contract which tells me he is being flexible, it is a shame the fans can’t support him!

How do you know Collins was “fecking useless” though?

If he was taking orders and implementing them for Rahic, then how come that’s not fine, but if Drury does this for Bowyer, everything’s ok?

(Just playing the Devils Advocate, a little here ... But think back 12 months ago) .............

DRURY ......... 'Collins and I are great friends, and talk all the time - bouncing ideas off one another. He's also a great coach, and I'm sure he'll succeed in this (Management) role' !!

So Jon - IF DRURY thinks the halfwit was great ...... WHAT does that say about Drury ?
    Just askin', like ? ;)

Nope. None of that helps at all, because you're confusing the roles of Assistant/Caretaker Manager with that of coach.
You may believe that we need an Assistant Manager, but that's a different issue from whether Drury is a decent coach or not. None of you know whether Drury is a good coach unless you've actually observed him coaching or have reliable inside info from those that have.

Yes, definitely - though I really don't understand why!

Alarm bells ringing everywhere this time last year. Literally nothing was done correctly. Dreadful preseason. Dreadful manager recruitment. Dreadful team recruitment, even if individuals actually looked decent on paper. Complete lack of understanding of managerial or player succession. Wasted budget. Poor characters.

Admittedly, it was surprising things went quite as badly as they did last season, but we were making problems for ourselves left, right and centre.

I guess some simply HOPED things would turn out okay.

    They didn't, ha.

    Elaborate?

In what way is Drury an unfit assistant coach?

I could write you an essay on why Collins was an unfit manager, so this should be easy if all those reasons are the same?

I'm not trying to trick you either, I'm genuinely curious what reasons you feel lead to your decision.

I agree about needing another coach/ assistant manager but I'm confused as to why the blame is being placed firmly at Drurys door yet GB and Hopkin for a while before him get a free pass after a terrible run of results?

Because if Bowyer doesn't think Drury can do the job he would have told Julian he wanted another coach, no more no less.
There is no point in the club keeping Drury on (to save a wage) if he is not going to offer Bowyer or the club anything constructive, I'm prepared to give the guy a chance if Bowyer is happy working with him.

No like Donaldson, O’Connor and potentially Vaughan instead of the likes of Barry Conlon last time. You’ve named 3 squad players, cool.

How can you possibly know this? You have no idea of the extent or specific elements of his role in last year's debacle. For all you know it could have been even worse without his input.
He's coach, not assistant manager. Why do you keep talking about about him as if he was or is assistant manager when neither is the case.

I’ve not said whether Drury is a decent coach or not. My point is, we need someone who can mix coaching with being an assistant and that isn’t Drury. Parkin did the job under PP, Black did the job under McCall. Who’s going to do it next season?

Where have I blamed Drury and given the others a free pass?

My point is that Collins was fast-tracked to assistant under Edin. I saw nothing from him to suggest he was right for the job. Then, Hopkin brought in a fitness coach to work with him and double up as his assistant. When Hopkin left, Bowyer brought Todd, despite having McElhone and Drury still at the club.

Neither manager rated him clearly. So why is Bowyer now expected to work with him now? For me, Drury should revert back to working with the u23s and younger, possibly taking some sessions with the 1st team too. But Bowyer should be bringing in an assistant to work directly with him

Which was my point. If funds are tight and we “have to cut our cloth” as Bowyer put it, why sign the 3i mentioned. Just releasing 1 would have paid for the assistant

Read up on last year. He was appointed by Rahic to work WITH Collins. Not to be his coach but to assist him along with Abbo.

I believe the reports subsequently, when both new managers joined, was that Drury would be retained in his current role.

However, irrespective of whether he is a decent coach or not (I saw no evidence that he was BTW, with no single player improving and we actually looked worse), we need an assistant, not just someone to take training sessions.

Players often looked lost and confused on formations. We lost the art of defending and looked woeful from set-pieces at both ends. Isn’t THAT down to the coaches?

TBF, Bowyer doesn’t actually say he rates Drury. In fact that’s another clink in the argument for. Normally, the manage would come out and back the person having to fulfill the role. All Bowyer said was that due to money restraints, we are where we are.

At no point did he verbally back Drury. He’s already said he wasn’t happy to have lost Todd, but expected to replace him. I’m sure he won’t be happy with the situation even if he is accepting it
