He plays as the more attack minded/box to box midfielder either in the partnership with Smallwood or the three man midfield we've seen recently.

Not once (that I can remember) did a midfield of Smallwood and Gilliead, dominate a game this season. That for me is a reason why we need to upgrade one or the other. We never set a platform to build from and of the two, Gilliead would be the one to make way. Smallwood came from a championship club, where his main role was to break up play, get in the way and pass to the playmaker. Unfortunately Gilliead isn’t that player. We need a midfielder who can pass the ball well. Clayton had the eye for a ball, but doesn’t have the legs and was rightly released. We need a Moxon or dare I say Watt type player who get more effective passes right than wrong. If you’re low on scoring, you’ve got to create more chances. In Cook we had someone who made a fair few chances on his own. Imagine what his tally would be if Moxon was dropping them on his head consistently all season? Gilliead for all his efforts has never been in a successful team. If we want to progress we have to do much better in a such a key position on the pitch. And then throw in true box to box midfielder for good measure.

Most teams can say that but some horrific home results against out of form teams and all those late minute goals ultimately cost us a top 3 place. So you are probably right.

Improving our home form and defending leads are the two things we drastically need to improve on next term.

This is the issue in a nutshell. Gilliead is not a playmaker and neither is Smallwood. Either or of them with A. N Other who is a playmaker would be fine, but both of them together doesn't work if we actually want to be an attacking force rather than a safety first one.

I agree. That said I keep Smallwood as our holding midfielder and bring someone in with creativity. I dont mind keeping Gilliead as a squad member. I like his engine and he isn't a bad footballer by any stretch. He just doesn't pair well enough with Smallwood.

Can anybody remind me of our last 'goalscoring' centre midfielder? Are we going all the way back to Dave Syers over a decade ago? He had a few goals in him.

Seem to see quite a few kicking around but we always overlook them. KD Davis, Pattison, Williams, Moncur, Kemp etc. Christ, even Matty Daly has a few in him....

As a squad player he's an excellent choice given that he can competently cover a number of positions if needed. My worry is however that that is not why he is being offered a new contract. He started just about every game this season and you don't go from being one of the manager's first names on the team sheet to mostly sitting on the bench next season. Either Hughes has learnt nothing and plans to continue with the same central midfield, or I'm doing him a disservice and the contract being offered is on reduced terms and he's just trying his luck to see if Gilliead will go for it. Time will tell I guess.

    10/10 for originality.

It certainly beats the far too easy "he does all the work that goes unnoticed" excuse.

Can't you say that about any style though?

There isn't just 'one size fits all' in football and 3 points is 3 points, regardless of how pretty (or not) getting them looked.

What about the games we got lucky in like Northampton away? There's definitely been at least a few smash and grab type wins.

Across the season, every team will have won a few they deserved to lose and lose a few they deserved to win.
That's football. The best team on the day doesn't always win.

You've missed the point. Those 15 points cam purely from conceding 9 less goals. That's the fine margin.

But that makes it sound like the issue was our defence when it wasn't. For god sake, don't let Hughes see this, it will make him want to go safety first even more.

Or we could score 9 more. It doesn't really matter.
Either way we were 9 goals from winning the league.
Probably 4 goals off the Auto's.

Agreed. That's why I don't think we can look back on the "what if" scenarios to imagine we are closer than we actually are in reality. It usually all just about balances out over a season and you end up exactly where you deserve to be.

I would think the only hard luck story would be Mansfield who carried a lot of injuries after Xmas. To finish 1 goal outside the play-offs carrying up to 11 injuries was a good effort. I can't imagine we would have got anywhere near in those circumstances.

Hughes will be well aware (I hope) that centre midfield is a weak point. He has had his hands tied a bit with Sutton and Songo not been up to standard and leaving, Osadebe out for a long period and East our only other real option. Clayton came in, but him going is a bonus, he will need to be replaced. And I see us getting another on top of that.

TBH we wouldn't really need goals from midfield if we had a winger that could get us into double figures (we lost Vernham) and a striker that could relied upon when Cook is injured, rotated, out of form. Walker is also good for double figures if he plays a full season.
