It might have been a mixture of our nerves/their confidence but they did look much better than us in the recent home game. I think they also had a few missing and rotated lots too.

Know exactly what you mean, sadly with some of the baffling contracts we gave out last year the retained list didn't offer massive scope for change - Gilly and Rid are only 2 where something more could have been done.
The key is going to be how progressive we can be in moving on some of the fringe contracted players - about 6 in my mind fall into this category. And how much have Gent and Hughes learnt in the recruitment, some successes last season but some pretty horrendous misses as well!

That's what I'm desperately hoping. If we see them as starters we've no chance.

You don't need much to get out of this league. 3 quality players to add to solid would be enough

I thought Charlie Wood was meant to be the next big thing? Any of the other youngsters got any chance of breaking into the first team. Haven’t really thought about it until now, but Hughes didn’t name a single youth player on the bench at all this season did he?

Hughes doesnt do youth. Hence the reason he signed two players in the Jan window with a combined age of 71

The only surprise for me was a new contract offered to Ridehalgh.

I'm guessing he will be viewed more as back up next season and hopefully look to bring in another left back. If so, maybe the offer reflects that.

Not a surprise, assuming he is for back up . On that basis it will be a lower deal than the one he’s about to end?

We’ve retained the core of the team here which is solid enough. Hopefully this gives us the scope to add a few higher quality players (rather than recruiting an entire squad as last year).

All you need is a few good quality players supported by a foundation of solid, reliable guys. I’d say we have the latter and just need to add that extra quality/spark in the forward areas. If we can achieve that then we will be in with a good shot at top 3.

I've heard Bobby Pointon is closest from that group.

That was correct about the season just gone. I fear next season we are mid table fodder if we don't bring the right players and change our style.

Personally I was a bit miffed with the retained list at first but after thinking about it I'm hoping it's not as disappointing as first seems, firstly Ridehalgh is probably not on big wages and at L2 u can't fill all your side with high end players so have to fill the gaps around the high end players with affordable steady heads, Gilliead despite an improvement with his move more central has still had disappointing stats with regards attacking contribution for a midfielder, but I'm hoping he's going to be the back up jack of all trades teams usually have around their squad, and if this is the case then I'd say he's probably an upgrade on the back ups we've had recently, Cooks contract offer is obviously a no brainer after the season he's had but I just hope the club have taken a bit of a gamble and offered him a 2 year contract rather than just 1 year as I'm sure many other clubs will offer him 2 years. If we have done the right thing and offered him the 2 years then I think he'll stay but if it's the 1 then he's gone.

Focus needs to be on recruiting better quality rather than quantity. Also our use of the loan market, needs to target good young prospects rather than cheap squad fillers.

Re-signing Gillead and Ridehalgh does not fill me with optimism for the upcoming season.

Help me out here. When did Gilly last play as an attacking midfield player?

As is your arguement. When Gilliead first joined us he was a winger or wide midfield player, since he rejoined us he has played mainly as a central midfield player, usually one of two playing deeper. He regularly won the ball back for us in a congested area in the middle and towards the end of the season was on occasions the only one prepared to get on the ball. His contributions I think we're more noticeable in away fixtures over the course of the season and our away record was quite good.

Interesting point mate. I think Orient scored the same amount of goals as us but conceded about 8 or 9 less but just look at the points difference. Like someone said "fine margins".

These are the facts that make the 'we're playing the wrong brand/style of football' incorrect to me.

What we did last season was play the right style of football not well enough lol

Didn't MH say that Ridehalgh was playing through pain as he was carrying an injury towards the end of the season? If that is true it wound account for him not overlapping or being prepared to to step out of the defensive line to challenge for the ball so much.
It would also lead me to think that the offer of a new contract isn't just as back up but more as first choice left back. Hughes obviously rates Ridehalgh higher than Foulds or Bola, and so do I to be honest.
Personally I think that the key signings will be the guys we bring in to play either side of Jamie Walker (or Harry Chapman) and whoever comes to partner Andy Cook or players to replace him should he not sign a new contract.
The lad who got two against us for Crewe would be someone that I would be happy to see us sign.
