So my eyes haven't deceived me this season. Foulds has put over 3 crosses a game with around 40% accuracy. He's not the sort of full back who has the pace to beat a player but he does possess a very good left peg with an ability to wrap his foot around the ball.

Everyone improves as they get more experienced. Frankly, he was the one big weak link of the side. Fans seem to forget that he performed well, only when he had Wright playing in front of him.

The diamond needs a more savvy full back. Unfortunately, they have to be good at full back, wing back and midfield.

If he has a good spell at Harrogate, it makes him more 'saleable' - although the reality is that he's probably leaving for free next January.

    The one big weak link?

Have you seen our midfield? Not to mention our non-scoring, non-assisting attacking players?

Is it? This reminds me of that pointless stat for Connor Wood our first season back in L2, when he crossed the ball the most of an EFL player by January and everyone assumed he was brilliant but the stat left out the accuracy percentage and the fact he only had 1 assist to that point. For a more in depth dive into his stats.....

Looking over the Opta stats for L2, Foulds was tied with Currie from Wimbledon for most tackles on average per game with an ave of 3.3 tackles per game. He was 17th in the interceptions p/g list for defenders, 6th best full back. He was 14th in blocks per game at FB.
Going forward, his 70 crosses have a 38% success rate of hitting another City player with 2 assists. He's 20th in the full back list for key passes per game with an ave of 0.9. Just as a LB, he was the 11th most adventures with an ave of 0.7 dribbles a game. For pass completion, he was 40th of L2 full backs with 64.1%. Finally is 2 assists has him ranked 23rd of L2 FBs.

So in his defensive play, his stats are up there in terms of tackling and interceptions. It's the other end of the pitch that Hughes wants an improvement in, especially moving to a diamond when the main width is going to come from RB & LB.

Is that not wholly reflective of we were weak down the left with Young , ie Foulds under constant pressure , before Wright came on board . Bet you I’m not wrong?

Two weakest links of the left now out on loan? Coincidence?

    Of note
Early season we were losing games 2-3 where we lost a header from the back post, where did the crosses come from ….Foulds / Young side from memory?

Brilliant understanding of the issue with Foulds.

Let's not be too harsh here, he's an average L2 full back - a big step forward from this time last year. He's dedicated enough to be perhaps improve to L1 level.

Ironically, he'll be good for Harrogate who have the 2nd worst defence in the division.

It has one. Well it does when Sutton does more than just run around all match. The central two are not the main problem any 'two' would struggle if those around them were not street smart.

Other way around. Our midfield needs a "diamond" in it.

and our right back nowhere to be seen leaving the strikers with free headers!
The Connor Wood / Foulds stats remind me of our discussion a few months back. The successful crosses stats based on the cross hitting a City player. Yet if a player gets to the touchline and pulls a cross back across the 6 yds box, but no City striker has anticipated, that's not deemed a successful cross. Damn stats!

Ah the world of stats. Reminds me of Oliver's goal against Salford where Gilliead hits the post and bar from a great cross from Halliday but Oliver gets the 'goal' from a tap in. Stats can mean what anyone wants them to mean to suit their narrative

I do not get this knocking of Sparks, i don't care how flash he might be. He and the commercial team seem to be doing a great job, which is helping fund Mark Hughes , like no other manager has been backed it seems.
As i said down to the manager and players to make it work.

Can't remember if he left him or was never anywhere near him. Earlier in the season we conceded several goals to uncontested far post headers on that side. In my book that's the right backs territory

PS not that absolves responsibility for not blocking the cross in the first place

Didn't he also quote the previous formation would be played by the team as long as he was here, I find it a little worrying he brings one of his ex-players Derbyshire in telling us he couldn't play last Tuesday night as we didn't have International clearance (or he believed that to be the case) no where to be seen on Saturday, now gets rid of a lad who has been a steady performer with little cover, Ridehalgh not kicked a ball in anger for us this season (just got back on the grass) according to Hughes, so were placing all our eggs in one basket (sorry for the pun) on a guy with a horrendous previous injury record, if it doesn't work out we can play Critchlow there or maybe Gilliead at left back ffs.

I've watch every game this season and I bet we've conceded more goals from our right hand side than our left, yes Halliday gets forward better but at times he left much to be desired with regards his defending in the box, remember Tuesday night no need what's ever to challenge the Rochdale player he was going away from goal just usher him out of the box, and with regards high ball into the box I can remember at least 2 goals where he was no where near the player who scored, but because the lad gets forward all the defensive stuff is forgotten.

I do agree heading is his weak point, what I will say is most full backs struggle with the ball coming over from the other side. I remember Gary Neville doing a segment on it and highlighting it as Kyle Walker and Trent Alexander’s biggest weakness including clips of goals. I think if you look for something it can be found, I’d be surprised if there weren’t similar goals from Foulds’ side. If there isn’t maybe that’s a compliment to Halliday that he’s stopped the cross. As you say stopping the cross is the best way to prevent a goal.
