Speaking TOTALLY as a Fan, Jon, I agree. I was right behind the Barrow bench and they targetted our left side most of the second half. I don't agree about the first goal, great shot right in the bottom corner, we would have been purring with a goal like that.
Do agre with the second and third, we got pressured and didn't cope well but that third goal!! Having got ourselves level (Cook and Young made the difference), well into added time surely the last thing you do is give a free kick away on the wide touch line only 15 metres in your own half, just close the guy down, even give a throw in away. In a crowded box with Barrow going for it anything can happen and it did.
Only two games, played some good stuff first half, up to speed and we will do well.

We play like a team 2-0 up and lack urgency. We only looked like scoring once we went behind. Route one, score and then pass the life out of teams.

Yesterday had all the hallmarks of seasons gone by. Loads of possession, loads of sideways passes, minimal shots on goal. A lone target man getting frustrated due to lack of service. General lack of energy from our forwards and little creativity or directness from the midfield. Conceding against the run of play, then waking up and starting to look like we’ll nick it, only to get hit on the counter due to lack of concentration.

I was really hoping MH would have stamped out all of the above, and still think he will, but it’s frustrating to see the same pattern of play and end results time and time again. We should be better than that,

What's baffling is how it keeps happening, despite complete overhauls of personnel in terms of management and players.

    The icing on the cake

Guess who got the winner for Donny yesterday?

I give you the man we love to mention as a perpetual target

    Kieran Aagard….I kid you not.

Some of Oliver's hold up play was really encouraging. He's capable of holding off both Central Defenders and retaining the ball for us. Our crossing has been poor in the first two games and he needs decent crosses to score goals. Also, both opponents have defended deep so he's not had the space to use his pace.

It's very harsh to judge him on a two week pre-season and the quality of chances we've created for him so far.
He's only going to get fit by playing! Same with Gilliead and Sutton.
We're might have to struggle through a few weeks but we'll get better.

City have set themselves up for a fall, we have a great manager who has got a really good squad together , and have been installed as one of the favourites to win the title ,so the rest of the teams in that league will , by default , raise their game against us.
City will have to find a way to cope with that and realise that winning is not a given and will have to work ittle harder.

To play that kind of game you need decent full backs that are quick and can cross a ball.

Pace in the team also helps.

Aren't you doing exactly what I've highlighted to Lewis, because fans who'd seen ROD over 3 years didn't feel he was good enough?

Lewis has only played 2 league games for us, surely we shouldn't be mullering anyone this early in the season, with a team of almost complete strangers (playing together wise) still trying to gel.

I know we're all disappointed with the result yesterday, but let's not revert to type and hound players into their shells.

Teams will always raise their game against us. Ex PL club, stadium. 17k fans. Act cocky before a ball is kicked but own fu@k all.

Players, fans and owners of other clubs would always want to take us down.

I had the same thoughts yesterday, it's almost like the players believe they've won the game without having to work for it. Successful teams in this league work their bollocks off. That's something we need to learn and learn it very quickly.

So 78 minutes out of a possible 180 (or 198 as it turned out) is major game time.

A bit like Boris losing the support of 40% of his MPs being a major win ?

They are getting picked. It’s bad enough.

When these two are starting or coming on then you know your squad isn’t good enough.

Swap two big strikers for one big and one little and you've just described the team that got us out of the Championship into the Premier League.

Genuine question but do you really think MH is a “great” manager and do you think this squad is any better or worse than previous seasons?
In my opinion we don’t have a better manager than any other team in this league. He has a reputation because he’s managed in the premier league but tactically I don’t think he stands out. There are some very decent and savvy managers knocking about now in the lower leagues.
The squad to me looks ok. It’s clear that they need time to gel. Smallwood for example is a good player with excellent experience and he has struggled. It can only be team cohesion. It will come. I think it’s vital we get some pace on the wings and someone who can deliver a cross otherwise Oliver and Cook are just passengers.
I also think we are far too young and naive at centre back. POC at the moment is looking a big miss.
Our last 3 performances have shown us all that there is a lot of work to be done. 6 goals conceded in those games and while we scored 2 yesterday we look void of creativity or that killer touch. I’m confident it will come together but I think we’ve all had to come down to earth a little bit this week.

Both will be ok when they've had major game time. Suttons energy is something we miss.

We've seen 2 games. Let's all calm down.
I think it's clear we have a better squad than last season.
We have a lot of new faces and there was always a chance it would take a bit of time.
We probably look like we are a Number 10/ Winger short after the injuries but I'm sure that will get addressed in the transfer window.

Sooner or later we have to show some patience and give the Manager some time. The smattering of boo's at the final whistle yesterday was shocking.

One thing I will never agree with, at this level, is that your width should come from your full backs.

Full backs are there to defend and to bolster the midfield four when your wingers push on, to fill that hole.

Why expect the players who are furthest back on the pitch to carry the ball the most yards and cross, by passing the midfield.

As Clough said, football is simple. Two wingers who patrol half a pitch with two fullbacks doing the same behind them to fill the space they leave, will work at this level.

A ball winner and a quarter back in the middle.

Get that right and you won't get overrun in midfield and you create width.

Defenders at this level will struggle with crosses from the byline because its been coached out of them with complicated formations.

The best fullbacks we've had have always been defenders not quasi wingers. Get out of the league and then try that stuff.
