From a Hull fan in the T&A......

Smallwood was excellent from us. He joined us at a time when I had witnessed our worst relegation ever (and I've seen some horrific ones) and he led the side to the L1 title and safety in the Championship (in a team under embargo and cut to the bone). It is only that we have been fortunate enough to have been taken-over and we're getting a new midfield. He's a leader on and off the pitch, thick and thin, model pro. Way too good for L2. Standby for promotion Bantams. Good luck Richie and thanks for everything.

Pretty much every signing we've made has been rated/well spoken of by their previous club. The only exception is Osadebe and that seems to be about consistency and attitude rather than talent.

It's clear Hughes didn't think Cooke could play the role he wanted and chose to let him go and I have to respect that. I also understand Cooke had limitations like any player at this level. Problem was under previous managers was they were trying to get the best out of those limitations rather than getting the best out of what he does well. I think there are levels to this game and Cooke could play a division higher in the right squad, just as I think Watt could do with the right players around him.

Cooke is not a defensive midfielder. It's not what he does well. If your looking for a scoring 10 I'd look elsewhere but as the stats show he was high up there in key passes and chances created. What Cooke didn't have the benefit of and what the players this season will have is Richard Smallwood anchoring the midfield. That's a proper DM. And that gives others the platform to do what they do well.

I liked Cooke a lot. Walker is an upgrade but i wouldnt have been disappointed if Cooke stayed. He got sent off once and that held him back. Didn’t seem as trusted after that. Think it was when he was on loan and he’d been controlling games from a deeper role. Had a few injuries and several poor managers in stifling tactical set ups too. I dunno.

He’s a decent footballer at this level. I wish him well wherever he ends up. A fresh start prob best for all concerned. He can move back up a division after a good season in L2

Casemiro?! We need players who've been here before and know what it takes to win promotion. I don't think he's won a promotion in his life. Smallwood has 3 on his CV.

I know I am giddy with this signing...the same with Doyle, The same with Wyke, the same in some parts with Cavanan, Vaughan shall I go on........The mad jocks managers Hopkin and Derek....sounds like a tv detective series.... but its part of supporting this basket case of a club since 1974. So I carry on each season and hope we move on up... I totally agree Fordy we deserve much better but this is a good signing mate and the feedback from the Vale/Dogsnoggers and Barrow is very positive about the players we have got... We go again

On his day Cooke was excellent but he would play like a world beater for a few matches then is his form would drop of the scale. A good example was under T&S when they took over he was brilliant until he got injured and when he came back he was terrible. He suffered under Adams but his form didn’t return for Hughes so he is looking for another club. Nice guy and overall a decent player can only wish him well

Looks like an excellent signing. Good mix of youth and experience developing, which is maybe the way forward. Things seem to be coming together nicely, wonder what’s going to go wrong?!

What were his wage demands? Could we do better for that position for the same money. It's not all about being a good player. Its consistently showing it and providing value for money in terms of wage/ability as we don't have unlimited budget or squad positions.

His wage demands were irrelevant Damo, he was released so his demands can’t be a factor. If his demands were somehow relevant he would have been offered a new deal aka, Watt, Vernam, POC for example.

Cooke was a good player. Stats speak for themselves (In terms of chances created) He excelled under T&S. He was our main player in that team. When he got injured, our form plummeted. It just goes to show that players can excel in certain systems. I think its clear that Hughes didn’t see Cooke fitting into the team he’s trying to build, so Cooke was let go. It is what it is

Anyways, This forum is dedicated to Smallwood. Who is most likely to partner him? Someone who can do the dirty work an provide the energy in midfield? i.e. Sutton or Gillead, Or are we looking at a deep lying playermaker instead? i.e East

That’s the conundrum, but yes if Watty goes then it’s Gilly or East alongside Smallwood. Only MH / GH know the “plan” , so let’s see what happens close season ?

You say we don't have enough to get into the top 7 well that was only 19 points difference across the whole of last season to 7th and 22 of auto's so quite easily rectified with the players we already have IMO. We drew 16 games so turning half of those into wins and losing a lot less of the 16 games would have seen us in a much stronger position. So its not as hard as you make out.

Always somebody else's fault. Never Callum Cooke's.

The player is the constant and he didn't deliver over a two year period. 5 or 6 Managers have tried after he bombed at Peterborough.

You say he's not a defensive midfield player but he looked his best under Bowyer, playing deep and using his range of passing.

I'm sure if MH thought he was good enough he would have been at Woodhouse Grove today.
