A deal in principle has been agreed for Salford City to move to the AJ Bell stadium, currently used by Sale Sharks and Salford City Reds.

A much more accessible ground, just next to the Trafford Centre.

Sorry yes, I got interrupted as I was posting and forgot that detail!

Could be an expensive trip for some next season, watching the football while the family go shopping for three hours in the Trafford Centre.

It is also only five minutes walk to City airport from there. So, if watching small aircraft take-off and land is your thing, then you are well catered for.

Not a major issue at the moment as they just don't have the fanbase but when United are at home coupled with the shoppers the road system around there can be a nightmare (So much so that United team bus has arrived late countless times when coming from the team hotel). So if it does go ahead they definitely need to improve the road system around there further because there will be a point if they achieve their goals where they have enough fans to cause big traffic issues. Mind you the ground only fits about 11k right? I can only guess the plan is this is just a temp intermediate step unless the plan is to be able to increase the size as they need it; so it may not be a problem. And certainly, if they are in the Prem I suspect the police will insist the PL ensures they don't play at home on the same day

You are right, the traffic can be a nightmare.

I actually saw the United team bus going down Stretford Road a couple of weeks ago and I did think that it cutting it a bit fine.

The AJ Bell stadium can be approached from the Eccles side along the A57 rather than through Manchester. There is plenty of space around the ground, notwithstanding the new Aldi, so they could develop it more should they ever get to the stage of regular 10k crowds.

I have been to see Sale play there. It was a few years ago, but getting off the car park area onto the A57 was a nightmare. We ended up parking closer to Eccles and walking. I understand that you can park at the Trafford Centre and there is a shuttle bus, but again it can take a long time to get off the stadium site.

My thinking was more than I imagine the Class of 92 and Peter Lim would most likely want to have their own stadium as you imagine they would be the ones who would be asked to put their hand in their pocket to fund most of the redevelopment. I'm not really a Rugby fan (Although if the Rugby Sevens we saw at the Olympics was a more regular thing I could get into that) so maybe I'm wrong but I don't think Sale really need more seats and there doesn't seem to be an obvious benefit to Salford Council and the group they went into partnership with to pay for more seats as for other events they are competing with a number of other venues in the area. So Salford City would be paying for a ground and getting very little benefit back.

The Salford RL club hate the stadium , when they moved grounds not many made the journey

Its way out of town with shite transport links and basically nothing around it , Salford went from 5k fans down to 1500 despite the owner Marwan Koocash at the time pumping millions into the team

I did think that but perhaps @Hulmebantam@Hulmebantam may be able to add more.

I've not been personally but I know of many rugby fans that have complained it's a nightmare to get to and there is bugger all around it, assuming drinks wise, not that Salford FCs current ground as anything like that either

Apparently the RL club are not happy with some of the press coverage as they have been ignored and not asked to comment

There are a couple of pubs within 5-10 minutes walk: a Wetherspoons and a Greene King. Neither a particularly memorable, but they are okay.

Access by public transport isn't good. It is a good 15-20 walk from the tram at the Trafford Centre. I understand the access issues if you choose to park at the ground, because you are trapped behind a busy junction. However, there are plenty of local streets about 5-10 minutes walk away, if you don't want to queue to get out.

It is pretty soulless there to be fair, but there is plenty of space and scope for development at that site.

I'm not overly sure how suitable the current football ground would be for rugby, plus maximum capacity of just over 5k would be a damning indictment on the current state of rugby league.

Would have to be a fairly small pitch, ensuring sufficient clearance between the in goal area and the stands

Take the tram and walk a few extra minutes instead of giving yourself traffic headache.

Will do yourself added favour with the extra exercise and reduction in air pollution. Win win.
