I would take what the deluded Newcastle fans say with a pinch of salt. They may think they are Real Madrid or Bayern but they are not a big club, their natural level is at the best lower half of the PL and they are in an area of the country they have to give players stupid amounts for their quality to join as Newcastle as far as most players are concerned may as well be in Timbuktu (Infact I suspect many players would choose Timbuktu over Newcastle as at least its hot). Foreign players largely want to be as close to London as possible, the likes of Man Utd and Liverpool have had trouble persuading some players to pick them over London clubs due to that and Cheshire is much nicer prospect than Northumberland.

It's also not a great place to attract sponsors for, it's part of the reason Ashley has often had his own companies sponsor them as there weren't better external offers, even he only could justify the amount his companies gave because having the same owner as the sponsor does bring some extra benefits that an external sponsor doesn't have.

He ultimately spent a decent amount through most of his ownership in comparison to many PL clubs and but did so in a way that didn't plunge them into crisis if they got relegated like happens with many clubs even when they have the parachute payments. As long as you lot weren't expecting to be in the PL in 4 seasons and top 4 in the first season with hundreds of millions spent on superstars he probably wouldn't be a bad owner for you.

He did the bare minimum to keep them in the premiership and turning a profit, all he cared about was keeping the Sky money coming in and holding on until a big offer came in, which he eventually got. A great (if morally bankrupt businessman) but an awful owner.

Between 2010 and 2019 their combined profit was £79million. That's only about £8.7million a year so really isn't a massive profit. Sure he could have spent more but £8.7million wasn't going to even pay the transfer fee of one good player every year, let alone when you add wages and the likes into the mix.

Should we really be wanting owners to be like Derby who drives them to the wall with overspending or should they actually be operating under their revenue? Just imagine where Newcastle would be right now if Ashley had thrown silly money at the club, I believe only Man Utd had a bigger loss due to lack of fans at stadiums than Newcastle and even with being run at a small profit all that money has been more than wiped out
