    I don’t, because it’s a multi national retail business but that’s what £6m receipts a month income , meant. ( 5 years ago)
The costs for taking cash to and from establishments three times a week by well known cash transportation companies was absurdly, absurdly, huge. Times have moved on since I retired , but based on the latter comment I bet all retail would wish for cashless?

I may be wrong about the transaction charges (age!) , but hey it’s not a deal breaker and the principle still applies to the interesting ( for me ) debate.

Based on say takings of £5000 per week
Card charges at an industry average of 1.5% £75 plus say 2 mobile terminals @ £15 Total charges £90
    Banking on £5000 a week
Paying in charge at 35p per £100 £17.50 Withdrawal fee on £1000 change £3.50 Total cash charge £21
Change needs is very limited because most users keep a float and do not pay coins or £5 notes in and keep it for change

Thanks Mike, we aren’t silly, of course, but if a pub or restaurant which we specifically go to for a meal, as opposed to just get lathered, then a reasonable tip is always given as long as the staff member who made it a nice experience, gets the reward in the form of a tip. Anywhere between a couple of quid and a fiver.

This notion of an obese beer swilling landlord sat of the end of the bar in a drunken fog, on a tall buffet, is just a smokescreen . It’s not inner City boozing like it used to be up Ivegate in the 60’s-80’s anymore!

    This doesn’t mean I decry anyone who doesn’t leave a tip…..it’s a personal thing.

    Well said.

I jacked my job in as soon as they insisted on paying my wages into a bank account. That's my money - it should be going straight into my hand.

And that is the point I was making. It is cheaper for companies to take card rather than handle cash no matter what the cost of accepting cards which has massively reduced over the past decade.

Tesco are trialling stopping cash back as it was costing them to get the cash in to give out. The original reason behind cash back was it was cheaper to give it back to customers, and pay the card charges, than bank it

Can’t agree more, I usually put a couple of quid in or if it’s on the card or expenses round it up to the nearest five or ten. Never given a tip to the bar though, bought the bar staff a drink if I’ve had a big win on the fruit machine in the club.

Reminds me of the start of Reservoir Dogs this discussion :)

Which is why HMG and HMRC are keen to reduce the use of cash, it’s better for the tax take.

You are just as likely to have money taken out through fraud at an ATM or cash taken out of your pocket in crowds than you are by card fraud. I had 100 euros nicked in Paris. Never felt a thing.

At least if you don't use cash you can make a claim from the bank. Banks won't refund cash you have nicked.

Need one. Choppers can go for up to £5k in original mint condition, should have kept mine (& the 1973 Soft top Spitfire I had) and cashed in on it years later.

Too right, stop all these thieving self employed tradesmen. Best thing that happened to most of them was SEISS grants being based on provable income.

It amazes me that some businesses still pay by cheque. We just have 2 customers who still refuse to pay by bacs. They generally pay on time so I just can't see why they want the hassle and the extra expense themselves It's also pain in the arse having someone go the bank to pay it in.

only cheques we ever bank at work are from HM Courts for payments that people convicted of theft are having to pay. To be honest they rarely get processed

Not paid either in since Barclays shut in Cross Hills two years ago. Everything taken by BACs now and all the better for it.
