Summer 2021 Transfers

Seeing as Borderlescott liked my guess I'll assume the name is right. And guess which manager signed him at Swindon when he went on loan there. Yup good old Richie Wellens

 

Think he was a very high earner there so it could just be Clough thinking he could spend the money more wisely.

 

Would imagine he'd have to take a wage cut to come here.

 

Adam May also played under Kenny Jackett, my outside bet for the job

May had a decent run at the start of the season at Cambridge. Sounds like he tailed off a bit when their form had a slight dip. Didn't start any of the last 11 squads he was a part of. Seems a tidy L2 CM and we really need bodies in there.

 

He'll fit right in with our lot, every single one of who's form tailed off.

 

We have enough L2 players, if promotion is a serious aim we need better than that, we need players who relegate Sutton and Watt to the bench.

 

It's another statement of intent that has come out of the club in recent weeks - that we are not only looking to bring in players that are good enough to get us out of this league, but one's that are also good enough to take us even higher. Time will tell.

 

2 of the 3 players we brought in from league 1 clubs in the January window have not fared very well so far.

 

Better give up and recruit from non league then.

 

I still think Crankshaw will turn out well

 

I didn't realise Crankshaw will be 23 when the season starts, thought he was still a teen. Tough to judge the lad, bags of pace but his touch lets him down a lot. Only played 900 minutes of senior football before coming here, at 22 he should have had more time that that. Hopefully a season as a first team regular can get him going.

Sutton was similar, signed him at 24 and he'd not even started 35 league games by that point in his career, but by the end of a full season, looked a much more dependable player than when he started at City.

 

I wouldn't put too much stock in the idea Crankshaw is a L1 player. He's not, he's a non leaguer who an L1 side took a risk on and it failed. Exactly the same with Pritchard.

The idea of recruiting from divisions above isn't always relevant. You seen anyone more League Two than Vernam? Even Canavan is a yo-yo player at best.

I don't think it matters what level we recruit from, personally, but let's not pretend everyone is already at their ideal level and that it's a strong indicator of how good a player is.

A few released that caught my eye. Mainly experienced, played at a higher level.

GK - Frankie Fielding, 33 - Millwall
CB - James Wilson, 32 - Ipswich
MF - Ben Reeves, 29 - Plymouth

 

My point was to recruit L1 standard players, but you knew that anyway

 

I think Vernam has been a massive non event. He looks far less threatening than Crankshaw to my eyes. His first touch reminds me of Ron Atkinson's quote about Carlton Palmer - 'he can trap the ball further than I can kick it'.

 

We haven’t the money to tempt top of the range division one stars it’s down to the director of recruitment to find players with potential who fit into what we can afford just the same as any club at this level
