For the most part our defending has been very good since the change of management the uncertainty on crossing seems to have worsened since the unnecessary change of keepers their seems to be uncertainty as to whether he is coming for the ball or not. Against that OD has made some good saves as well. The point about our set pieces is a good one we don’t make anywhere enough from them. And with Cook Canavan Paudie and Aoc in the side we should be doing better

That is usually to do with the poor quality of set pieces and corners, They either do not get past the first defender or are that deep they go over the goal completely, Get decent balls in they will win a fair share

Sorry to open a not so old wound, but as we have got two keepers on a par, but quite different in style, for this one I would prefer Hornby. Although the last two times I have seen Grimsby and Hanson play, I do not think there is too much to be worried about, Grimsby's current style of play will be frustrated and bettered matched by our retaining possession, on the floor football dictated by intelligent, quick decisive play originating from the keeper, and the confidence this generates in the back.

Saying all that I do not think Hornby will play for us again, unless ROD get injured before the break. And regardless, I think we will win this one.

Scored for Swindon at the weekend with a typical left foot curler.

If the 2 Centre halves are concerned about James Hanson at this point in his career then we're in trouble anyway.

True and what is causing angst I think is that we're not creating lots of chances but our conversion rate must be really high.

I think we'd all be more comfortable if we were making lots of chances and therefore losing the odd goal here and there wouldn't matter because we'd probably be scoring more than one. At the moment scoring more than one per game looks hard so conceding any makes everyone nervous.

Hanson will pick on any uncertainties in defence. He has the extra incentive of it being a former club. I’m not saying Canavan or Paudie can’t handle him further up the pitch but as we know, one chance in the 6 yard box and he’ll put it away.

What’s changed in your opinion from the strong defence of a few weeks ago, to the keystone cops approach we saw recently?

I don't think anything has changed, we've been poor from crosses all season, whether that be stopping crosses coming in or making the first contact in the box. Lets not pretend we were much better from crosses with Hornby in the side. Yes he punched/caught more than O'Donnell but off the top of my head, we conceded 3 crossed goals at Carlisle and 2 at Exeter with him in goal. Now I'm not saying Hornby was to blame for any of them but what it shows is that we have a problem with defending crosses/set pieces regardless of who the keeper is.

Under McCall we were understandably poor due to continual changes in formation and personnel. We then had a period of stopping goals and shots on target. The formation was consistent during this period and still is today. The 2 recent changes to the defensive unit were FCD and Hornby. Most agreed the moving of AOC to right back strengthened the defense and I think the majority (could be wrong), believe the reintroduction of ROD has weakened it. We've now reintroduced FCD & ROD and the defense is back under pressure and incoherent. Could it be coincidence? We saw on Monday how POD berated O'Donnell for not coming out to catch the ball coming into the box, so we know it's not just the fans who have this opinion.

My only hope is that we're talking about a victory on Saturday evening and not pointing out or singling out ROD's performance, other than in a good way.

    One chance? Really?

It's the same James Hanson that's scored 2 in 20 this season and just 17 in well over 100 appearances since leaving us and to add to that he'd also recently had a longer goalless run that Kurtis Guthrie.

I'm not suggesting he can't score because of course that's nonsense but to suggest the centre halves should be readying for a torrid time is also nonsense and if he hadn't played for us before you'd now be sat in your chair quietly confident that they can handle a big lump of a forward who'll win a few headers but doesn't carry much goal threat.

The type of goals we are conceding are bread and butter for Hanson. That’s my worry.
ROD doesn’t command his box and our centre halves go missing when defending corners.

I’ll have a punt on Hanson causing us many problems on Saturday and will probably score at least once.

The Stevenage fans may have said the same thing about The Don last Saturday.

Let’s not exaggerate the problem in the last three matches we have conceded two and scored 6

While Hanson was on his 43 match drought, Donaldson was still getting games and scoring goals in the 2nd highest tier of English football.

Anyone making that comparison isn't really thinking hard enough.

Now it’s been a long time since I played, but from what I remember, if the ball comes into the box, you clear it unless you hear the cry of “keeeepers”, in which case you get out of the way or expect to be wiped out by a big hairy arsed six footer!

We scored 4 in one match though and let's be honest, we didn't score those 6 from like 20 shots on target. If it were 10 shots on target I'd be surprised. We've had an amazingly high conversion rate in the last few games. We're not really creating loads of clear cut chances.

I actually think it started against Cheltenham, even though we kept a clean sheet. Their long through caused us plenty of problems which no doubt opposition picked up on, since then I feel teams have targeted putting high balls into the box against us even Eoin Doyle had a free header against us. For all the stick R’OD gets, although it is his main weakness, we looked absolutely pathetic against the long ball against Carlisle with Hornby in net and I think teams since then will have seen that as the best way to score against us. A keeper does need to be more demanding in the 6 yard area, but the defence have to take a lot of the blame. A’OC ducking a long ball which a Stevenage player ran on to and forced R’OD into a fantastic save on Saturday was one of the most pathetic pieces of defending I’ve seen in a long time. A bit more evidence is just how poor we are in the opposition box at attacking headers, it’s a weakness of ours but a team weakness that has been found out recently.

I don’t think Hornby should have been dropped on the back of one game, but that’s on the management team not the replacement keeper. I think both are capable keepers with obvious weaknesses that you’d expect at league 2. Time for the team to take more responsibility as a whole for defending, because we are actually getting away with it a bit atm even though we are conceding we could be letting in even more.

Not just long balls and height..they took no prisoners on the ground either with no-nonsense tough tackling. Something we need to clue up on.
