Was Hanson injury prone and in the twilight of his career immediately after his Sheff Utd debut because that's when his 18 month barren run started.

 

All right you've got me. I'll bite. Are you seriously comparing Guthrie to Hanson?

 

Guthrie started tonight for Port Vale and of course did not score.

Vale fans giving it the big one on social media about him signing now realising what a poor player he is at this level. Read a few comments admitting we did try to tell them and now they are stuck in the same problem we were when we signed him. As a club they look like we were 7 games ago, a club with no strategy, hell they haven't even replaced the manager yet. Sometimes you have to admit that what you are doing is wrong, we waited till we were second bottom to realise the fans had been right for a long time.

 

We're discussing longest periods of time when strikers haven't scored. Hanson's at 18 months and around 50 games is one of the longest I've found and certainly longer than Guthries even with the covid enforced lay off. In fact, Guthrie, in game time terms has over half a season before he matches JH so why shouldn't he be mentioned when discussing this topic?

 

Well it took Rowe just one and a half games to beat Guthrie’s record here. And had probably already had 5 times as many shots on target.

Can’t believe in a Covid world we can bring Rowe in, but brought Guthrie in during normal times to replace Vaughan. Hopefully a sign of positive progress.

 

Fair enough....although I think you are comparing a striker who should be in his prime to one who is ready for the knackers yard, but I can't argue with the facts

 

Hanson was 28/29 when he moved to Sheff Utd. Guthrie is 27. There's really not a lot in it.

 

blimey I though Hanson was older than that. Maybe it's due to the physical abuse his body has taken over the years that has him ready for the knackers yard then.

 

He was ready for the knackers yard 18 month before we flogged him. That was the point of the debate time and time again but due to past achievements some decided to criticise him was somehow blasphemy and refused to believe what they were witnessing with their own eyes.

Some still refuse to believe it even though they've been proved wrong by history.

 

I prefer to remember Hanson at his best,he was brilliant for us

 

He was.
Much as I loved Parky's era, there's no doubt that he flogged big Jim to death. All that chasing down defenders from the front and playing when not fully fit massively affected his effectiveness later on.
But, even when clearly half lame and chronically out of form, he still brought more to the team than Kurtis Guthrie ever did.

 

Completely agree. PP, whilst being good for Jim's City career didn't exactly give him the best chance for longevity.

I do wonder if he has yet to find the right club for his unique skill set.

Nope. Played 90 mins on Saturday. Local rag described him as “worked hard but did not threaten the goal”.

 

The "worked hard" bit is an improvement surely?
