The government needs to subsidise affected businesses. They have the means, they’d have even more if they taxed more thoroughly.

as for who shields etc - i think we are in it together, at 42 i don’t feel i should get a free reign at the expense of someone older and more vulnerable. The handling of this has been terrible; they’d rather pit the workers versus the retired than have both groups questioning what they have done, collectively.

"In children and in young adults, it is less severe than the common flu. In middle aged adults it is about the same. In nursing homes and in hospitals that get infected massively, it can be a disaster."

Sorry - in the earlier CNN link, I meant to precede with the news that Professor Ioannidis of Stanford University has reduced his estimated IFR from 0.27% to 0.15-0.2%. This seems to be becoming a common recent estimate with the caveat that it varies greatly from place to place, particularly with age profile.

It is quite clear the western world was not equipped to deal with a pandemic like this.
The eastern world had SARS relatively recently and knew what to do and when to do it. Let’s hope we learn lessons from this period because I imagine something else will come along in the next decade or so

Thanks for that. I appreciate you finding that.

I'm a bit skeptical about taking a twitter account with 2,000 followers as a nailed on source though if I'm honest but it is what it is. These are the sort of people, who although well intentioned, have been pretty wrong about things for various reasons (bias, incomplete bases stats, misinterpreting data, etc, etc) all the way through this.

I'm not sure you can say that if somebody tests positive after 7 days in hospital that they definitely caught it there (they might only get tested after the 7th day of their stay for example) but even if that is the case then it's still 82% in the community and 18% in hospital unless I'm misreading his findings.

The authoritarian regimes and lack of freedoms probably help just as much though. Both through the controls and also the flow of information that the West simply would not put up with.

I think the SARS thing definitely helped the Eastern countries because of their experience though and also made the Western world more skeptical. How many of these threats have we had just in the last 15 years (bird flu, swine flu, SARS, MERS, Ebola, Zica) and it probably got to the stage where it was like the boy who cried wolf and we were all way too complacent about it ever truly happening.

This is a very grim press conference prior to the PM giving his statement, saying the Nightingale hospitals must be prepared.
The grafts they were showing are very much a North/South split I believe some have been far too complacent but that is around the country not just in the likes of Liverpool, Leeds or Manchester.
Now quoting even thought the North East/West are showing the worst they expect the South to follow the trend very soon.

The bit that really struck me was that there are now more people are now in hospital with Covid than before restrictions were announced in March.

Boris will make his statement in the Commons at 15:30.
Now saying the long term effects of having Covid are increasing for some of those who've had it.
The hospital admittance rate of the aged is increasing quicker.

I hadn't seen any previous reference to that and it should be really concerning. I can now understand why there is a level of panic in Govt circles.

And the videos I saw from Manchester and London, of Saturday evening's pub crowds, show that far too many people are just not getting the message.

You leak to the public that the pubs will be shut for lockdown with an announcement coming on Monday and then are shocked that they act like it's new years eve over the weekend.

I know this press conference this morning it part of the governments strategy of creating fear so it's impossible to then resist the draconian measures announced later in the day whilst washing their hands of any responsibility for sending hundreds of thousands of students to Towns and Cities which started off this spike.

Honest question, would this weekend been like that if they hadn't leaked they were shutting down hospitality prior to the weekend?

The sad thing is, the situation on an evening has been the same for the last 6 weeks.

And these will no doubt be the very same people blaming the government and taking no responsibility for their actions in the next month or so.

New: I'm told that 'food-based pubs' such as Wetherspoons will be allowed to stay open in Merseyside while pubs and bars that don't "substantially" serve food will have to close later this week.

Hahahahaha hahahahaha I wonder why that is? Something to do with the owner of Wetherspoons? Just give it up now. It’s a complete joke

We learn something new about Coronavirus everyday. First it has a curfew and must be home before 10pm, and now it's apparently on a diet so needs to stay away from temptation.

I don't think it would of made a blind bit of difference, I don't know anyone that has genuinely said that they were off on a blow out because of new restrictions, however I'm sure the main stream media will report that's the case. I think it's case of people feeling invincible and a lack of responsibility.

It's an adaptable little devil but unfortunately as yet hasn't listened to any of the Prime Minister's rhetoric.
