I see this woman is telling people what they are to be offended of.

Maybe Manchester United should change their nickname from the Red Devils as it might offend Christians.
Maybe Sheffield Wednesday should change their name because it's offensive to the other six days of the week.
Peterbrough should change their nickname before it's not inclusive of the poor.
Bristol Rovers nickname should be changed in respect of all those people who's ships were looted and sank by Pirates.
Cod Army should not be used in Fleetwood as it's disrespectful to Haddock.

You can find offense in anything if you want to dig deep enough and play it from a stupid angle. Did anyone really look at Exeter Rugby Club and felt they were a bunch of racists? I guess the thought police getting the Washington Redskins franchise changed felt it could be used across the world now.

I’m offended by ignorance and stupidity - I spend a lot of time offended.

The natural reaction to this is to push back on it as a ridiculous idea.

However I think the Redskins name change (which was a matter of time and correct IMO) then the focus falls on the next thing.

As a general thought though. Is it right to lump in a section of people which is largely based on race alongside other nicknames that are beasts?

I don't particularly think theres anything wrong with chiefs, I view it in a similar way to knights or pirates but I think we need to be more open to discussion on where the line sits rather than dismissing it out of hand.

The mascots and logos are probably bigger issues than the names but it is all part of the same discussion.

As far as Exeter Chiefs are concerned, I think "Chief" is used in a complimentary manner. I do see your point about mascots and logos though, although again I personally see nothing negative or racist in the Chiefs logo

Changing Redskins may make sense as it’s now deemed derogatory but removing all the other branding is going too far imho. Why treat the logo as a sign of disrespect and not actually a way of celebrating the Native American population

Because that doesn't suit the agenda of the "let's be outraged" groups.

Although racism and what causes offence used to be quite straight forward and obvious today things are not so clearcut. The many incidents in the USA, over the years and the ones more recently highlight the big problems we face in the world dealing with race and equality issues.
However the various groups insisting that Exeter Rugby Club haven't gone far enough in dealing with the issue are making certain assumptions. I thought that the name adopted by the rugby club was intended as a heads up to the indigenous population of North America. Is that not allowed?
Apparently the actor David Harewood found out that his name came from the fact his family were slaves owned by the Harewood House Estate. I don't think he intends to change his name.
We are opening up a real Pandoras Box.

There have been ongoing campaigns regarding the name for many years, it isn’t something new. Only difference is now the sponsors have switched sides

It's difficult for me because I don't really think it's wrong and I'm not that part of the community.

However consider that it is a sign of respect due to what fearsome warriors they were.

Now consider being a Native American in 2020 just trying to get on with normal life the the only representation of "your" people being as warriors and characatures.

Would it have any effect? I honestly don't know and as a white guy it isn't my place really. Is it worthy of discussion though? I think definitely yes.

It might be worthy of discussion but only to the 0.1% of the populous who either care. Or are offended by it. By coincidence I was working yesterday with a lad whose wife descends from the cheyenne tribe. She'd never heard of the Exeter Chiefs and didn't see what the fuss was all about. Yet another form of grief tourism where someone is desperate to be offended on behalf of someone else. And you can guarantee they are offended by everything.

I'm not offended but i will be if it means you can be offended. I'm glad we got rid of the city gent mascot, city gents are not native to Bradford anymore and as for the bantam, i'd much prefer something plant based if i ever go vegan. Bradford cucumbers or summats.
