    https://www.placenorthwest.co.uk/news/alternative-hs2-piccadilly-hub-could-save-billions/

Sorry if there is another thread but just stumbled across this being discussed on twitter.

An alternative plan to HS2 which would involve a high speed trans pennine route, the real kicker being it would go from Manchester through Bradford, Leeds and on to York. Could be a huge game changer for Bradford as a city if the alternative plan did come off for some reason.

I would love to see the Exchange and Forster sq as a through line , it was talked about years ago but never came off , both stations are basically a dead end .

apartfrom the line going straight through Broadway etc I don’t think the corner could be done from where the two lines currently end and as both lines are built up around it I’m not sure if they could be diverted enough

A desk study was done by Arups (I think) to connect the two stations with a viaduct and build a new station which would have been an integral part of a new Broadway development plan. From memory it was going to cost an extra circa £300m. But nobody could come up with the extra money. I don't quite know where the Broadway development is now but it seems to me that a good opportunity was thrown away at the time.

They could go under Broadway , i went to Barcelona 2 years ago ( large difference i know ) but the rail network in and around was unbelievable , the railways were a very cheap and reliable way of getting around Catalonia in general . With a bit of thought this could be done in the North . As an example i would have to change 3 times to get from Carlisle to Bradford , it's expensive and slow on the current Network .

No doubt it would be good for you lot in Bradford but it seems to me that doing it this way would have a net loss on the people it really helps

I know we get the usual howls of derision from the usual suspects but the rail network in this country is pathetic compared to various countries abroad and around the world. Going into mainland europe the big city public transport link embarrass ours.

TBF though ours is also light years ahead of lots of major countries as well. The big problem we have as always is space. In towns and cities our roads are often much more narrow than in many countries with no space to extend them and doing upgrades to major roads, train lines etc also runs into the space issue which means to extend them has to displace people and business. We are just too over populated for the size of the land we have that makes everything more complicated and expensive to implement

The whole HS2 debate is a farce.
It will be the biggest white elephant the country has ever known.
Billions spent to try to get people from London to Birmingham in a few minutes shorter than at present, when after the current pandemic is over (if ever) there will be no demand for this service, and certainly no finance for it.
As for the extension to the North, forget it, it will never happen.

I don't think I've ever met someone in favour of HS2, right, left or centre politically.
