Rather than burying this in an extremely long thread, as a small specific issue here is a new one!

Okay since the whole Coronavirus/Covid-19 issue arose, I have only gone to one supermarket in Bradford. That is Morrison’s on Mayo Avenue. A few comments about the experience:
    • Queueing to get in, socially Distanced markings, staff ‘regulating’ the numbers in.
    • No trolleys nearby which have been desanitised on the handles By staff.
    • Once inside, no arrows on the floor setting out a ‘one way‘ system.
    • Narrow isles less than two metres across.
    • People wearing ‘masks’ over mouth but below nose (why bother).
    • People wearing masks waltzing around ignoring the 2 metre guidance.
    • Couples (why does it need 2 to shop) walking side by side and therefore less than 2 metres from others in the store.
    • Ignorant.... ‘why do we need to do this’ people ignoring the 2 metre guidance.
    • Switched off people.... in a world of their own, not aware of the 2 metre guidance.
    • People who because of their limited ability to understand the issue, trooping around often in pairs.
    • No guidance by the store staff in respect of customers dysfunctional behaviour, to ensure safe shopping.
    • Check out issues on self checkout with staff not safe distancing if there are problems with scanning.
Felt the experience was a bit of a very bad joke. The approach felt tokenistic at best. Not sure if @wetherbywhaler@wetherbywhaler still has any contacts with the organisation.

This is not a knock on the supermarket chain, but based on my objective and dispassionate experience.

Any thing to add about other supermarkets or indeed Mayo Avenue?

I have been to Morrisons at Five Lane Ends twice since lockdown. Nightmare experience.

No security on door controlling numbers going in and out. Far too many people in the store for me to be able to shop safely. People selfishly reaching over you to pick items off the shelf.

Second time I tried, I walked straight back out.

Been going to Sainsburys at Greengates since, which has been a total contrast.

Respectful queueing outside, queue sometimes looks big when you pull up, but average wait time has been about 8 minutes to get in. Once inside, you have almost got an aisle to yourself, shoppers definitely abiding by the safe distancing rules, staff seem more pleasant, and no queuing at the tills

So big thumbs up for me for Sainsburys and thumbs down for Morrisons.

I shall continue to shop at Sainsburys now, even after we get back to normal

The only thing that seems different is that at Mayo Avenue, they do have staff ‘regulating’ the numbers entering the Store.

Inside they had a sort of system, which meant you had to queue to get to the checkout, but as l was shopping for a housebound relative and an additional ‘self isolating’ neighbour, I went to the conveyor belt ‘self checkout’ so I could separate the items Into three different shops. When the bar code wasn’t recognised or it needed the member of staff to call over because of a fault in the system, they didn’t wait for me to distance!

Got a ‘click and collect’ yesterday from Tesco. They had swapped Items and I ended up with loads of beef but had actually wanted a smaller amount of lamb!: unamused:

I have been to all the big supermarkets except Tesco over lockdown. It seems that Sainsbury and Waitrose have much more space and wider aisles, and also seem to allow fewer shoppers in store. Feels a much more distanced and safer experience. I do feel the Asda and Morrisons I have visited are employing all the measures but are much more cramped and therefore feel less distanced. The exception is Morrisons in Hunslet who for some inexplicable reason have closed the ends of the aisles by the checkouts, meaning you go down the aisle and have to do a U turn at the end, coming back past everyone coming the other way

That is the same as at Mayo Avenue.

There are two Tesco’s near where l live. One has wide aisles, the other has far less floor space, but still seems slightly wider than Morrison’s. However both Tesco’s have a clearly marked blue arrow ‘one-way’ system which virtually everyone adheres to.

I did a click and collect shop at Tesco's in Great Horton in early April. I foolishly imagined they would have my order ready in boxes and I would simply drive in, open my boot from my car, they would put it in the boot and I'd drive off, with no human contact whatsoever.
Not at all. There were assistants coming right up to my driver's door window asking my name, instead of going to the passenger side. Then a bloke brought out a trolley with a load of carrier bags on that I had to load into the boot myself. He then came right up next to me to collect the trolley without waiting for me to get back in the car. Given all the publicity I'd seen from Tesco about how they were reorganising their stores, I was gobsmacked by how sloppy the click & collect was.
I haven't been near a supermarket since then. Getting weekly veg deliveries from a local greengrocer and a supermarket delivery every three weeks or so from whoever I can get a slot with.

I've just shown the thread to my other half. She wants to know in these difficult times whether Bantam Talk has merged with Mumsnet. What a sexist comment. ;)

And she's still giggling. She just has no understanding of the concerns of modern day football fans.

With no sport, pubs or restaurants to visit. My weekly supermarket visit has become the highlight of the week on my day off from work!

I think @Tony Wilkinson@Tony Wilkinson would be deeply insulted by that suggestion ;)

It was meant to be a joke, not an insult. Hence the wink emoji..

Foreign view from the South of England.
Sainsbury - great, well organised and not over-ran.
Tesco - no entry control but organised inside.
Asda - controlled entry but once in, nobody cared what they were doing. Only once, not going back.
Waitrose - who can afford a big shop there????

Plenty of people who would ordinarily be going out on the town and regularly blowing £100+ on a night out. Or going for expensive restaurant meals once a month. What else are they spending it on at the moment?

Been having Morrisons home delivery when they first introduced it, great service, our lass makes her order out gets a slot and she can amend it up until 24 or so hours before delivery. They take the goods (all bagged) and ring the door bell they are left on the doorstep, we wear gloves and wipe every item down with wipes,.
We paid £30 or so for 12 months delivery, it's a great service, I would recommend the service be it Morrisons or any other Supermarket.

    Loss of earnings from Furlough?
Putting some aside in case the worst happens?

I see Waitrose as an occasional treat, maybe £20-£30 to upgrade for a nice family meal. I just can’t imagine the cost of a big shop there!
