Something ironic about you saying you can be grown up after the way you've posted in this thread. Some of the shortages we are seeing, whether directly effected by it or not all stem from China.

It's the manufacturing hub of the world, at the start of this year a prolonged closure with the Chinese new year and then add in the factory closures because of the lockdown China was essentially closed down for circa a month. Most of the factories are back at work now, but even still are only running at about 50% capacity in my industry and are obviously facing back logs because of the down time.

Exchange rates have a huge factor too, we were at about 1.31 USD to the pound last week, as of this morning it had dropped to 1.22USD. The market is very volatile, particularly in my industry there is a lot of gambling, because my products are commodity it is almost like gambling on currency trading.

The reality is WTO rules or not, do you see shortage on shelves of countries that adopt these trade rules? No. In a Brexit scenario major superstores like your Asda, Tescos etc can work with the supply chain to make sure they forward buy stock to cover extra demand and make sure stock is here to service stores again. The supply chain just hasn't had any time to plan around this as it has come on so quickly.

To reiterate comparing the shortages we are seeing now to a Brexit scenario is stupidity even when looking at it from a neutral point of view.

Brexit negotiations need to be postponed for at least twelve months. This country will be in no position to carry the burden of this straight after we get the all clear

I get your point but I think the EU will have a far bigger burden than the UK, I'm not sure there can be a date arranged as to when the talks can restart, I'm sure they will continue once this massive problem is sorted.

I’d be quite surprised if this isn’t the beginning of the end of the whole EU ‘project’.

Now that US has decided to block exports of things like face masks and is refusing to honour deals with other countries, they are looking like an increasingly lousy trade partner.

I'm seeing a lot of anti-China sentiment too, who have also had disrupted trade.

Not a good time to be at logger heads with our nearest neighbours... We were never going to get good deals with giant nations, so where would we honestly go from here?

Things wont be easy for any country when this is all over, and I believe the EU will be hit harder than most, before this crisis the likes of Italy, Spain, Ireland and others were not happy with what was being sugested with regards the new EU budget after this they will be more than happy to trade with us.

Yes, fortunately Brexit or no Brexit I really can't see a lot changing fundamentally in terms of trading and political relationships.

But there really is no worse time for a nation with an extremely limited manufacturing base to try to go it alone in terms of trade.

We need to become more self sufficient import a lot less we have acres of farmland we are surrounded by sea and fish. Here in Filey the local fishermen can only fish for sea trout two months a year because of European regulations.
I have always been against leaving the EU because of business reasons but now we have as well as becoming more self sufficient in food we need to invest heavily in technologies of the future and start to rebuild more of our manufacturing base

Just a thought, With the trade negotiations failing and the UK saying there will be no extension to the final break in December then it may be in the Governments thoughts that as we are going to have a massive recession due to Covid19 then the effect of a no deal would be considerably less to the economy and may be a boost to the no deal supporters in the Tory party.

    Quelle surprise?

Johnson lying through his teeth again, as anyone with half a brain knew he was. No change from his long established practice then.

There was never going to be a hard border between Ulster and Eire, so a customs border in the North Sea was inevitable. Johnson has done what Theresa May could not bring herself to do - put Northern Ireland into a permanent customs union with Eire.
Our Prime Minister lied to the Ulster population in November and denied that this would happen, knowing full well that it would. And, of course, he sneaks this out in the middle of a national health emergency so that it gets little media attention.

Well be out soon no point in trying to negotiate unless Barnier and his gang charge their stance, when they are trying keep us tied to parts of EU legislation.
What dont they understand about brexlt, no ties, not still under their jurisdiction, great to have a tough negotiator in Mr Frost.

That's fine. As long as we're prepared to suffer the consequences of the inevitable tariffs that will come with no deal.
We can't have it both ways. If we're not prepared to conform to EU standards and free movement etc then we must be treated the same as all other non-EU countries. And the economic consequences of tariffs on trade with our biggest trading partners will be huge, especially on top of the Covid 19 recession.

They can not keep us any part of EU jurisdiction and if they persist that has to be the outcome, Frost will not allow it to be one sided, the EU are in a bad way internal squabbling Hungary saying they will not take certain refugees, Italy and Spain far from happy with the way they have been ignored with regards the Covid-19 pandemic.
We must be treated the same as all non-EU countries except Canada and Denmark I believe, we've asked for a similar deal to Canada and the EU's argument is we can't have it because were too near the EU countries.
