Before we all get giddy at the prospect of playing Fylde, Halifax and Solihull Motors in the northern division of a new combined EFL/NL regional league, let's just take a step back and think of the money! Not the saving in cost of not having to travel as far as Exeter on a wet Tuesday night but the money we receive currently from the PL/Sky solidarity payment and from our share of the EFL's TV broadcasting contract. The two combined are worth about £1million to us and other khazi clubs. That's about 20% of our total income.

There is already some pressure from Championship clubs to reduce the amount of the TV contract distributed to the lower leagues. A new league with another 24 clubs or so sharing the TV contract might just be what the Championship clubs need to reopen how the contract is shared with clubs in the other divisions. It's important to the Championship clubs and their view of the contract have already cost one EFL chief exec his job. The PL is equally under presure from its own members to reduce the solidarity payment in view of Sky's view of the value of BCD broadcasts and the extra costs of testing etc. It would be easy for them to use these changes to reduce the current solidarity payment to the new league. Some already argue that the PL clubs don't get much in return. Even if they don't reduce it, sharing the current £12 millon or so between the 24 teams in the khazi may in future have to shared between 48 clubs! Or if youlike, halving our share.

I'm sure that the chairmen of the current 24 clubs in the khazi are more than aware of these issues. Let's wait for those sorts of details to emerge before we start planning our next trip to the Shay. Done badly, we might save tens of thousands and lose many hundreds of thousands in the process.

Don’t know if that’s aimed at what I said. I would only be in favour of merging leagues one and two and making them regional because for all sorts of reasons these days it makes sense

No, not you in particular. I read what you said about regionalising Divs 1 and 2 and some of this might have a bearing on that but not necessarily to the same level. Others have mentioned combining Div 2 and the top tier of the NL on this thread and another one. That's my primary concern.

All this maybe academic if Lee Power at Seindon is right. On local media today he forecast between 30-40% of L & L2 clubs won't make the start of next season without cash injection from higher up.

Oh wait! So he hasn't said anything for weeks. His team gets promoted and now he brings the begging the bowl out?

Interesting! It amazes me both Port Vale and Bradford didn't fight their case more to try to get into the play offs.

Merging L2 and the NL would be another nail in our coffin.

It may be academic or it may not be. Who really knows what the future holds for the lower levels of pro football? But based on the many structural options which were referred to in the Mail article which somebody posted, there didn't seem to be much in common with what Lee Power has said. Imo, there are too many lower league clubs in the former 'red wall' for the Govt to ignore the issue. There's an awful lot of money sloshing around in football, of course mainly in the PL and in the pockets of PL players. The PL takes around £2bn in revenues from TV broadcasters etc and whilst it gives about £100 million to EFL clubs via the solidarity scheme, adding a similar amount for lower league clubs would stop the rot if Power is correct. I'd expect the Govt to be leaning on the PL to help out the football industry.

The football league from the championship down have been sailing toward the iceberg for years. Bury was the intial impact and now we are seeing what happens when SS EFL starts to take on water at an alrming level, the whole thing is sinking quicker than the titanic. Yet its no real surprise is it? Clubs allowed to spend way beyong their means with real tangible assets, it just needed something like this virus to uncover the whole charade. This a watershed moment for lower league football.

I agree. You know my view on the way football is mnanaged financially and the way many clubs are beholden to their owners to extract the club from the mire. The EFL's governance of the league is pitiful and its FFP regime in both the Championship and at our level isn't fit for purpose. It's been staring us all in the face for years and the EFL has done FA about it to date. And once again as the fallout from Covid 19 continues, nobody is showing much leadership; the only exception I can think of ironically is the agreement amongst the Div 2 clubs to end the season now. Other than that, it's everybody looking after their own interests first.

Why should they though. As I already said profit levels at PL level are not good, most make a loss and things like playing behind closed doors, the hit on sponsorship and the likes are going to make that even worse.

The EFL has spent years just wasting the solidarity and parachute schemes by paying average player ridiculous wages. Giving them more money just to waste and bury their head in the sand solves nothing.

There's no reason why the PL should help out the rest of the football pyramid. It's not as though the riches of the PL haven't pushed up players' wages to unsustainable levels throughout the football pyramid, including through the PL's own parachute payment system, is there? Of course the PL can ignore the impact of its own procedures on the the plight of the rest of the pyramid. The PL can continue to do its own thing once again to the exclusion of the rest of football and simply look after its own interests. But what's just around the corner which might well turn the PL on its head?

The end of the Brexit transition period is now near its end and after that PL clubs can only recruit new players if those players have a HO work permit to play in England. EU players might well be treated exactly like non-EU players are currently. And which body does the HO rely on to advise whether the players in question meet the immigration criteria and allocate what is known as the Governing Body Endorsement for a work permit to be issue? The Football Association! Yes, it might well be that the PL has to think a little wider than its own narrow interests for once.

A little further than I thought at 304 miles (considered 250ish miles as north east of London), only 329 miles from Bradford to Plymouth.

Is the only stipulation that Shefield Utd stay up?

Yes I believe if Sheffield stay up and it will take a massive drop off for them to fail we will have a possible club saving injection of cash

£12m. Probably the salary of just one above average PL first teamer. Or 5 or 6 squad players who never get near the first team. To me that seems like a drop in the PL ocean

And so long as the PL completes its schedule of games so that Sky and BT don't withhold some of the remaining payments to the PL or expect a refund of some which has already been paid!

Isn't it somewhere around 1/2 a million pounds? With the way things are looking that could easily be a quarter of next seasons budget.
