Should Footballers be put on Unpaid Leave?

    Given that footballers are no longer playing and that a significant number are not training, should they be put on ‘unpaid leave’ in essence ‘laid off’. Can clubs continue to pay high salaries, if their income has virtually ground to a halt. Other sectors such as flight crews, hotel, hospitality and catering staff (even firework manufacturer’s https://www.peterboroughtoday.co.uk/health/coronavirus/staff-laid-peterborough-fireworks-factory-coronavirus-closes-public-celebrations-2451831) are responding to the situation. If the clubs continue to pay substantial salaries, then they must face the danger of going bankrupt. So for the long term benefit of the game, should players, some coaching staff and back room staff predominantly involved in match day activity, be on at the very least very reduced pay?

    But why are they any different, than any other worker who is affected by this situation. Surely they should be treated the same as pilots, chef’s, bar staff, air crew, etc.

    Do they not get full pay? I've been on gardening leave before and that was full pay. If I need to self-isolate, my employer will be paying me my full wage in sick pay.

    Footballers still have bills and mortgages to pay. They still need to feed their families. The shutdown is very likely to last months rather than weeks, nobody can afford to lose that sort of income.

    Some of our squad have been on leave whilst getting paid in full most of the present season.

    Gardening Leave is something available when you hand your notice in, often to go to a competitor. I have had family members who were paid for 3 months.

    This is fundamentally different. The firm (or club) could go bust, if they have to pay substantial salaries, with no income.

    The links provided are a completely different situation to the one in your op.

    The examples you provide are of staff being 'asked' to take unpaid leave and clearly have a choice. The way you describe it in your op you would be forcing players to take unpaid leave which, I imagine, isn't legal.

    It was a hypothetical question. As I have said these are very ‘different’ times. If a business loses a substantial income stream, it may well be in danger of going bankrupt. In those circumstances could the club ‘lay off’ footballers? I think a number of clubs depend on match day income to survive, if it dries up, then their ability to function will be put under intense pressure.

    You made reference to my first post. The link I provided contained this paragraph, ‘She said about 70 staff had been laid off and they were no longer being paid’.

    The problem is by the time football comes back its very possible most of them will be out of contract so they will have been taking unpaid leave until their contracts run out and then be out of work for even longer with no club willing to offer them a deal until they know when footballs back.

    Also the clubs may be fine on wages depending on their insurance policies as this may be covered (Certainly at PL level it will be)

    No, a high earning player will have a lifestyle and outgongs reflecting that income.

    You'd thing these players sat in a 2 up 2 down counting their wads. When in reality they spend huge wads on daft stuff providing and securing employment for many.

    Voluntary pay cuts can not be compared to people being forced to take unpaid leave.

    It seems as though you want to force this thread to totally remain on the wording of the thread title.

    My fresh post was looking at how things are changing in response to Coronavirus.

    As you are well aware threads on message boards often veer away from the narrow confines of the title.

    This development looks at footballers and is relevant to their income and a reduction.

    It is rumoured they have been told if they didn’t then it could force the club into admin, so either defer some wages now or don’t get paid this month

    Aren't the government paying 80% of wages (up to a max of £2,500 pm) for employees who cannot work with the employer paying the 20% (optional)??
