    Thats true Birky. However the international weekend has been in the calendar for months and why release tickets (particularly early imho) in the full knowledge you may postpone. It just feels like an attempt to sell more tickets for a more attractive match as maybe not all refunds will be claimed. And dont get me started on the travel bookings.
    I would hope City wouldnt do this but maybe i am being naive. Cheers

    Regardless of anything that Colchester may have put or not put in their terms and conditions, they will have to refund match tickets to anyone who requires it.

    Following an OFT (Office of Fair Trading) ruling in 2008 (https://www.theguardian.com/football/2008/dec/05/tottenham-hotspur-ticket-refunds-oft), and to comply with the Consumer Rights Act 2015, it was made clear that clubs cannot refuse refunds, in respect of postponed matches, nor should they try and attach such conditions to the sale of tickets.

    Having said that, and despite it being 11 years since the OFT decision, and 4 years since the Consumer Rights Act came into force, it seems that some clubs have still not got the message.

    Whilst it's understandably unfortunate and irritating for people who have pre-booked hotels, travel, etc..

    Anyone pre-booking in November - February surely must know they are running a risk of inclement weather conditions causing disruption, and therefore should book flexibly to cover themselves in the event of a cancellation. I know I would/do.

    Whilst it's not a weather issue causing the cancellation, before some smart ars£ points that out, people booking at this time of year should take care with bookings, or you've only yourselves to blame really.

    Weather is a risk that all supporters take in the four months you identified. It is unpredictable, but can cause a 'possible' disruption.

    Having players in your squad, who are internationals, who the club must have a reasonable idea will be called up, is a 'probable' reason for cancellation. A release of tickets after the date of the squad announcement, is perfectly reasonable, if the game is to go ahead.

    It isnt rocket science, rather common sense.

    In reality the governing bodies are responsible for allowing the situation to arise. Given the Byzantine rules that they have, it is wholly reasonable that they could include a new rule, to try and reduce situations like this occuring.

    Can I suggest that fans consider writing to the Independent Football Ombudsman https://www.theifo.co.uk/ if they have strong feelings about the issue.

    Good luck.

    The approach I take is, prior to the start of each season, I print off a copy of the fixture list. Then I,
    • note all the fixtures that clash with international weeks;
    • note league matches that clash with rounds of the cups;
    • note the deadlines for the selection of televised match picks (not much of an issue in League Two);
    • have regard to the main months that the weather could affect matches (I tend to work on January to March, but will have regard to longer trips outside these months); and
    • note other matches that may get moved (e.g. Easter Saturday / Good Friday or that clash with major cultural events like the Shrewsbury Flower Show).
    That allows me to build up a picture of the risk of each match going ahead on its scheduled date or not.

    Then I will take into account the savings to be made by booking early for a match as opposed to 'paying on the day'. If the match has a higher risk of being moved then I would need a large saving to tempt me to book early.

    For rail travel, you can categorise tickets into three broad options:
    • advance tickets (purchase up to 12 weeks, sometimes more, ahead - fixed trains and 'non-refundable');
    • split tickets (can be a combination of walk up and/or advance tickets); and
    • walk up flexible tickets (refundable tickets that can be purchased right up to departure).
    I rarely stay over for matches nowadays but, on the odd occasions I do, I always look for those that can be cancelled, without charge, as late as possible. Booking.com is good for highlighting those with free cancellation options; sometimes they will offer free cancellation, when booking direct with the hotel won't.

    After all that I still occasionally get the occasional match that is postponed, where I have purchased non-refundable tickets; sometimes the saving on advance tickets is just so good that it is worth taking the risk. The way I look at it, you lose the odd one, but you win on most. For such matches I always try and have a plan B available, an alternative day out. For anyone travelling down to London, on the original Colchester date, I believe tickets are still available to see the Tutankhamun exhibition; I went there on Monday and it is truly amazing.

    With 16 November now being a blank Saturday, let's hope we can beat Shrewsbury on Saturday and ensure we don't have another one later this month.

    You do realise that you have created a task for yourself, as I guess people would benefit if you shared this complicated algorithm! Perhaps it could be included in the https://bantamtalk.com/index.php?threads/2019-20-city-fixtures.2656/ ;):thumbup:

    They are slightly different in the way that sell tickets with progressive pricing to reward people who buy early so really they have to put them on sale early or there would be no point in doing it and they have to match what the home fans are offered. If they didn't put them on sale until the game was 100% on then they wouldn't be on sale until today or tomorrow at the earliest which would cause just as many problems for fan to plan if the game was on.
    If you are saying you wouldn't want City to postpone a match if they were weakened and had the option to do so just to be nice to some opposition fans then it sounds a bit naive. Although the distance wasn't as far we did postpone a match a couple of seasons ago against Blackpool on the monday before the match.
    We aren't the first set of fans to be affected by this and won't be the last. Only today Sunderland's match away at Bristol Rovers has been postponed despite tickets already going on sale.

    Its annoying as its bit-part players for ColU, If it was Devine, Anderson and say Mellor, I honestly wouldn't mind if we didn't postpone, clubs just usually take advantage to have an extra week off.

    I can understand were you are coming from winter months etc but if you look at the clubs that have had very little postponements through the weather over the last 5 years Colchester are top of table so it was not a risk as such not like going to Carlisle in Dec that’s what a risk is, like I never book away hotels on Cup game dates that’s if we are still in the draw.
    Colchester knew exactly how to milk the system selling game tickets at reduced cost well in advance with increasing up to the same day purchase they would then hope that all those that have purchased tickets will still attend the midweek game rather than get rebates which everyone is entitled to, I would sincerely hope that those that purchased a ticket Pop down to VP and get a refund forget about Colchester, as one previous post said boycott them they will soon get the message, clubs like BCFC have a fantastic away support and should treated with respect like most clubs did in div one, but if this is the way that div two is shaping up I can see many problems ahead.

    They do that for every game so hardly like they picked on us. People seem to be taking this very personally, they don't care if they are playing 2nd place in the league or 24th they'd postpone the game like every other club would.

    Would they? In the unlikely event that three bit part players like Anderson, Gibson and Patrick were called up for international duty would we call off the game? I doubt it.
    I just don't understand their motivation. Surely it's better to get the game played and avoid a spring fixture pile up than postpone because three players who are on the fringes of their squad aren't available.

    To me the most shocking thing is learning Montserrat have a FIFA football team. Had to google it. Population 5,900 Thats half the size of Otley.

    Maybe (I haven't checked) they have injuries to other players who might benefit from an extra week.

    Their players aren't bit part, 1 has been injured until recently and suspect he'll be a regular, 1 has started every match he's been available and the other has made 12 appearances in the league. Even still if you have 3 players missing on top of a few injuries then why wouldn't you take the chance to get the match off when it's only the first time this season and at most will happen 1 more time in March.
    If you look around league 1 has 4 matches off and league 2 now has 2 matches off due to internationals so it shows most, if not all, club who are eligible to postpone a match take the offer. Got to remember as well a lot of clubs at this level don't have big squads and certainly don't have the strength in depth we do so for some clubs 4 or 5 players missing hits them just as bad as 10 players out does to us.

    It really is the fact that Colchester have sold tickets when they must have known there was a ‘probability” that they would seek to postpone. It is also the EFL/FA/FIFA rules which allows them to do so, collude and condone if you will.

    Clearly if Colchester have players called up, then it is their prerogative to cancel the match.

    The situation where a club has taken money from people, when they know it is highly likely to be cancelled, is unacceptable and an abuse of power!

    To make arrangements for a 8 hour 30 minute (if there are no traffic problems) car journey or an 9 hour 20 minute train journey is exceptionally difficult, especially if it is likely to occur during the week. Do the football authorities, suggest that adults take time off work and children miss school, just so that they can ‘tick a box’. Personally l think it is appalling.

    They had to plan like the game was going ahead until they knew 100% 3 players would be called up to international duty just like a number of other clubs in league 1 and 2 have. What if them players didn't get called up and they hadn't sold tickets then they probably wouldn't have gone on sale until yesterday and that then causes problems for fans of both clubs as they can't plan ahead. People seem to be making out Colchester have put tickets on sale when they did when the reality is they put them on sale for the same length of time for all 23 league games.

    If City are knocked out by Shrewsbury we
    could play Macclesfield or Colchester on Saturday 30th November if either of them are knocked out of the cup.
