Having read a few posts in the Restaurants and Stuff thread https://bantamtalk.com/index.php?threads/restaurants-and-stuff.34/ then I guess we need a dedicated thread!

    Okay here we go.

    Pub: The Ross Hotel Saltaire.

Drink: Bitter (Pennine I think, but definitely Websters)

    Age: I recall that I was 15.

The other stuff! Being quite tall I was able to get a drink relatively easily. Then again The Ross (now with an ‘e’ at the end of it?) was somewhere which was relatively laid back.

I was advised not to ask for a pint of beer, but to ask for ‘bitter’! After a few months I worked out that Mild was cheaper and not being loaded, then the saving seemed worthwhile.

A couple of small anecdotes. I was in the Jacob’s Well and was just under 16, when asked if l was 18. Initially l said ‘no’, but then quickly recovered and said ‘l am 19’! Got away with it.

When l was 17, l was asked in my ‘local’ if l was 18. Having gone in there for about a year l responded ‘yes, but why have you asked’. The landlord replied, ‘well every morning l see you walking past the pub to get the school bus’!:whistle::laughing:

Great Northern, Thackley. Aged 16 years old.

I dont know how I got served, as I dont think I looked 18 then. But the Northern had a reputation amongst the Idle boys at that time of being able to get served.

If memory serves me rightly, in those days you would get the police popping in checking out under age drinkers. We used to buy our pints of 'mixed' and sit in a corner away from the doors

A far cry from fake ID our kids had to obtain to get into bars when they were growing up

White Horse in Bingley, aged 16.

96p for a pint of 'Blue'.

Drank in there for about a year and a half, until one Friday, about a month before my 18th birthday they wouldn't serve me. I had been seen in a school uniform apparently. Hadn't worn for nearly two years.

Out fairness to the rest of the sixth form, who were also in the pub every Friday night, I refrained from pointing out that I was older than at least half the people in their full pub.

Age eighteen I showed them my passport and then started drinking in the Brown Cow. More mature in there and better beer.

Tetleys mixed brings back great memories
Back in the day Bold Privateer Wrose was my first pint aged 16
No problem getting served in there or the Crimshaw which was the best pint for miles around

You ready for this, l actually worked for several months in the Bold Privateer. The Tetley ‘mixed’ crowd were some strange folk. Some even had to have the mild in first and then the bitter topping it up.o_O

Never noticed whether it was Bitter or Mild that when in first it all tasted the same to me

Punchbowl, Cleck. Aged 15. Half my school year went there on a Friday, it was like a youth club. The £10 a week I got from working part-time at Stobarts pie factory got me 10 Lamberts and enough money to make a tit of myself....Around the same period of time, I used to go with my Dad to the Woodman down Manchester Road, he used to pass me a couple of bottles whilst having a game of pool after the Football.

The Privateer was at the bottom of the road where my mum and dad live, i'll bet i only went in there half a dozen times when i lived at their house. Used to go the Bull instead.

That is not as bad as going into a Webster's pub and asking for a pint of Tetleys which i did at fifteen.

Took a while to live that one down.

Royal Standard Manningham Lane-aged 15/16 IIRC- before City games. Games of pool and 2 pints.... then onto the Belle Vue for the *ahem* beer. Then down VP at 2.55 into the Paddock.

    Great memories.

It took me a while to pluck up the courage to order my own drink and I got taller, older looking mates to do it for me for a good while. First drink I ever bought for myself was a snakebite in Spiders below the old Express bar. It was Christmas eve and I was 15. Happy days.
