Richard Dunne was a big “you know” user. For younger supporters, a Bradford heavyweight boxer who fought Muhammad Ali in the 70s who then had the Odsal sports centre named after him.

Yes Richard Dunn, I took my daughters to watch Richards home coming on Mayo Avenue beautiful evening and he drove past in a big American car (Cadillac) ?.
Richard threw more leather and occasionally hit Ali during their 5 round contest than Joe Bugner did during his 15 round no contest, but in those day not many hit Ali to hurt him.
Back on topic Andy as most footballers is not the best with regards co-commentator but the few times I have listened he sounds to be improving.

That made me laugh. You'd think if you had a job in football commentary you'd at least learn some of the basic rules. Especially the "new" ones that are a minimum of 3 years old.

From my point of view, the writing was on the wall when Stix was shown the door. The way that was handled was nothing short of embarrassing. After I left, none of the usual prep work and little audio packages/graphics I handled got done so was a struggle to create the type of engagement we were used to. Budgets (or lack there of) meant JT had to blag someone to co commentate week to week and pay them out his own pocket. The decision to bin pulse sport was blamed on return on investment and falling audience figures but you decimate the product and don’t seek a sponsor, that’s the inevitable result I’m afraid. It wasn’t everyone’s cup of tea and that’s fine, but comparing the last two years of Pulse to Radio Leeds is like comparing a Ford Mondeo to an Aston Martin. They do the same thing but one has vastly more expensive parts.

Interesting stuff, thanks Ewan. For what it’s worth I thought Sticks was very good on the radio, shame to hear he was dispensed with in ways that you alluded to.

I think it is a bit rich really calling out Andy Kiwomya when his heart is clearly in the game and our club. I listen to him and ok hes not David Dimbleby but which footballer is ? He gives his opinion as co-comm and he understands the game. His opinion is defintely a valid one because he has actually played the game at a good level over many years.

Contrast AK with say Alex Scott the England ladies player who is on absolutely everything these days ? But AK would not get the gig on MOTD or Sky or with Kammy on Sunday. Yet he has played the game at a far higher level than Ms Scott ??

So if we are going to be patronised on National football tv programmes by pretending Ms Scott can instruct us on the mens game ? equally as Shearer or Murphy or Souness or Redknapp then I am certain Andy's opinion is as valid as Ms Scotts and more so. Even if he may not cutely smile and articulate it just as well ?

Yeah, but given the choice between watching Ms Scott on TV or AK I'm going with Alex. She's bang tidy. She'd give a dog a bone.
Most footballers are totally inarticulate. God knows how Jamie Carragher got the Sky gig. So one (like AK) who can give legible and coherent commentary is a fairly rare thing. Especially at league 2 level.
I think the 'you know' thing is a nerve thing. I'm sure that given time AK will settle into his role and some of the more annoying aspects of his commentary will go away.

Why? Omari Patrick has been a pro footballer for 3 years+ do you think he knows more than the ordinary fan... They were good at playing the game (Well AK was) doesn't mean they know about every aspect of it. Gary Neville was great at football and talking about football as a manager not so much..

Always remember an old Yorkshire post journalist who was a bit of a legend criticising a Sheff Utd manager. The manager said "What do you know you've never played the game". The journalist replied " It's true I've never played professional football, but I've also never baked a cake but I know the difference between a good one and a crap one".

He had a career in football and seeing the ins and outs of the gane on a daily basis that would suggest to me he has a far more comprehensive view that the ordinary fan who watchs football will never posses.
Not sure how the Neville situation comes into it, with regards his managerial career, maybe he couldnt deal with the man management side of the game.
If we are taking Neville as an example of a presenter or co-commentator hes very good as is Jamie Carragher.

Listen to the Gary Neville interview on the Last Word with Stan Collymore podcast. Amazing how honest he was about his time in Valencia. It didn't go wrong due to his knowledge.

Apart from City (43 games), Kiwomya never made double figures in appearances for another EFL club and in fact made less than 100 appearances for professional clubs.

Yes that's more that most can dream of but it's hardly a wealth of experience at EFL level.

Im sure modern day football managers have a far more difficult time with players because basically they have far more power than players of the past did.
I do believe having man management skill have a big effect on modern day players mainly because of the money some are on.
Do you have the link for the pod cast you mentioned.
