Ratings .... Ye or Nay

It means, like me, you were rubbish with your predictions in the 2018/19 Prediction League!

Blue = Big losers, no ambition, know nothing about football but taking part is what matters
Light Blue = Not quite as big a loser but still no ambition and still know nothing about football but still took part and so on until ..

Silver = First loser but has lots of ambition and knows more about football than Rahic
Gold = Winner. Knows everything about football and it's combined with tonnes of ambition!

See this is to me is the worst reasoning going. It's why Reddit, for example, is such a cesspool as it turns into an echo chamber. You can write a well-informed post using reasoning and evidence but if it doesn't match the 'agenda' everyone agrees with it gets downvoted into oblivion on mass so it drives people who have differing opinions away as it almost ends up being used like mass bullying when people with differing opinions are actually good for any place of discussion. If you disagree with something you have a reason for doing so as such the expectation that you can actually justify your reason isn't that much to ask. Its a million times better and as a poster to have people disagree but provide a reason than sit there in secret clicking dislike. I would go as far as saying that for community building even with reactions they should actually only be positive reaction options rather than having negative ones


On the technical front BTW, I did actually implement this many months back and it broke multiple things. Some of you may remember that as you contacted me about things being broken. I could probably work through some of the conflicts but the biggest issue is at the time we were looking to limit it to certain groups to prevent abuse of the system (and also as a perk for being good members of the community) but when activated it takes over the whole like system. All previous likes are no longer shown and anyone not able to use it lose the ability to like posts completely. As such this idea of allowing an opt out isn't going to work as it means not being eligible to receive or give any likes at all, not just the 'reaction likes'

 

Our setup isn’t exactly the same as C&B so we have unique conflicts that wouldn’t have been the case over there. Also the reactions plugin for our version of XF is a different one to the one they used. Due to incompatibilities with the original hosting server software and XF 2 we are using 1.5 where as C&B were on XF2. If we were using the current hosting where we have full control of all the server software it would have been a different matter. Mind you even if we were using the same XF and hence the same plugin it still wouldn’t solve the problem that it replaces the Like system so if we enable it and let people opt out those people lose the Like system just because they don’t want involved with reactions and the potential negative aspects of that.

There is also always the consideration that at some point we will need to upgrade to XF 2.1 so spending too much time on something which would need replaced isn’t alway the best thing. 1.5 is more stable and efficient than 2.1 right now so it’s not a pressing need but there will be point where 2.1 is both as stable, more efficient, more feature rich and more secure
