Name one ‘workhorse’ team that was successful without talented players too

Who said workhorse teams don't need talent? :)

But in terms of under-talented sides, there's really not much to the Lincoln City side that just gained promotion - nor was there anything to the Accrington side that got promoted the season before (and stayed up).

Bradford City had absolutely zero talent compared to Wigan, Arsenal, and Aston Villa, but we bested all three over four games.

This is the minimum we're talking about, but it's also the springboard to success.

Don't forget, Cristiano Ronaldo's number one attribute was work ethic.

Last season we had very few workers. We finished bottom by a country mile.

Even then, a team of average players with a game plan, working for each other need some quality too before they can get those 12pts.

Even using your McCall example, we had the likes of Doyle, Wyke and Killa to name 3 that were better than average

So Bowyer won’t be speaking to any players out of contract and considering a new contract offer?

I would struggle to imagine which quality players he is planning to poach on what looks like one of the shoest of string budgets, but if you hear otherwise, fine!

Without drawing on last season (this ?), and the Good (on paper) team we were supposed to have ........ Would it be insane to consider Accrington Stanley as an example of my theory ? Maybe even AFC Wimbledon, to a point ?

One of us is missing the point. Ronnie stated that an organised team with a work ethic is as good as a 12pt start. I disagreed and stated you need some talent too.

You then stated that “Under-talented sides overachieve every year”. I’d argue that an under talented side don’t possess quality players. Both Lincoln and Stanley had a minimum of one or two stars as well as a work rate. As for the City example, yes we had to work hard, but we also had talent in the mould of Wells, McArdle and Darby to name just 3

Poach? Out of contract players, offered deals to stay, often choose to move on. Just go back a few seasons and you will see we offered deals to a number of players who chose to go elsewhere. McArdle, Mezza and Marshall are 3 examples.

And how do you know he is working from “the shoest of string budgets”? If you have heard he is, feel free to share. Until then you’re guessing

Can’t comment on the Wombles as I don’t know enough about their squad. However, I’d argue that Kee, McConville, Clark and Hughes are better than ‘very average’ for Stanley

    OK, OK, OK !!
Getting battered into submission, here, whilst revisiting the same turf over and over again.
So - We can accept that all teams have the odd star or so ? Which in one respect is great - It dispels the theory many share that team 'X' is totally Shite ! :D (Even City had Payne, O'Brien and Caddis ;) )

Therefore, if all teams have say three talented players ......... Then the starting point would be that these are average sides - and the more talent you have, the better the side would be expected to perform ?
Yet an average side, with the right work ethic can out perform a side supposedly better equipped, who lack that ethos.

Taking us to a conclusion that limited teams can overachieve, whilst other, more talented sides can and do under achieve. :)

    Why was it "smart arse"?

He hasn't ever spoken to Mark Cullen and knows very little, if nothing about his aptitude that he was championing.

Thanks for your input though, it's helped move the thread on immensely.

There are 72 FL Clubs outside of the Prem and only 3 can be Champions, 3 auto promo's and 3 up through playoffs. Not a given to be one of the nine. Leaving 63 also rans..Success doesn't come easy folks.

@Ricky@Ricky is correct, League Two has its champions, plus two automatic promotion places and the play offs (hence the four relegated from League One). But your general comment is right. A ratio just under 1:6.

Please, Northern - Don't mistake my Cullen comments as 'championing' him. (Thanks ;) )
I was merely trying to illustrate the player isn't as bad as some like to think. For sure there are better options, but also a damn fair few who are lower down the ladder in terms of ability and work rate. My overall point in all this, was comparing him to similar - In my case Ball (whom we've seen over a series of games) - And the likelihood hood that although nearly like for like, Cullen would probably be the cheapest option, should Bowyer pursue any interest in either. :)

Likewise - Of that remaining 62, nine will be relegated, two of which will be through the EFL trapdoor. Having money helps, but is not a guaranteed 'get out of jail' card, at either end of the process. ;)

I'm not really sure what's going on now or if you and Cougar are some sort of tag team.

I replied to you and Cougar posted so I replied to Cougar and you posted?

I'll probably just bow out and leave you two to it.
