Be interesting to do some kind of analysis on pre season performance over the years and correlate with final league position. My gut says there would be no relationship between the two at all.

 

You must have missed the 2018/2019 pre season then.

But no pre seasons dont have any baring on the season ahead but they should give the manager questions and answers.

 

Forgot about that one. Reminded myself of just how bad it was having a look on wikipedia. Ended up down a rabbit hole of looking at past results. I forgot how well we were doing in the first half of the 17/18 season. Out of interest, what happened in Jan 2018? Was that when we bought in a load of random German players? We went from winning week in week out to going on a run of about 18 games with only one win and mainly defeats. Anyone remember the exact changes that lead to that?

 

A rumour that Edin pulled Luke Hendrie off a bus to Yeovil (I think) to say we wernt signing him from Burnley and players downed tools as a result.......so Edin lit another fire but the players let McCall and the fans down after.

 

Jan 2018 was when the players had finally had enough of Rahic and his massive ego. He wouldn’t veto the signing of Lee Hendrie and wouldn’t let him travel home from Yeovil on the team bus. He was also laying off a lot of admin/club staff as well such as Wendy the player liaison officer.

Rahic was falling out with McCall for weeks, but somehow McCall managed to protect the players from it before it all came to a head. The players downed tools and that was the start of our downfall for the next 7 years!

Usually good talkers. Every scouser I've met or worked with usually loves the sound of their own voice.

100% @Wakefield Bantam Baldwin offered Edin a reduced deal for the rest of that season with a one-off payment if we won promotion and Edin refused it.

 

What was the overlap with Baldwin and Rahic? I thought Rahic ran the club and made the decisions immediately after joining?

 

Baldwin was CEO at Burnley and was involved in the loan of Hendrie to City.

Great player, fantastic leader, such an excellent addition.

It's a joy to watch him organise other players, I thought it would be a tough one to replace Smallwood, but this is a mega upgrade.

Still plays 20 yards too deep for me. He drops in, even towards the full back area and completely empties central midfield which imo is why we look vulnerable there too often.

He needs to trust the centre halves more with the ball and just do his own job by offering himself for the ball higher up the pitch and picking up those scraps with Metcalfe.

 

I think that was his 10th yellow card of the season yesterday so he’s going to get a 2 match ban. Even if I’m miscounting, the cut off for 10 yellows is 37 matches so he’s definitely in line for a 2 match ban sooner rather than later.

I’d wager around half his yellows are for mouthing off. It’s something he won’t change at this age but definitely a weakness in his game.

It’s a shame given he’s improved massively the last few weeks with Metcalfe alongside him.

 

I think you’re right Dave , it’s probably a trust thing? Defensively , as stats point out, it makes us stronger , however weakens our attack and the middle just in front of the opponents defence ie the area between the edge of the opponents box and half way line . Certainly three times the player Smallwood would have been in this division though .

 

Yes I get what you mean but we would be the first to moan at the LACK of a player mouthing off and chelping at the ref . Hes the Captain , it’s his job. However being less than subtle hardly helps
