I would've let him go but one year as a back up (if he is that) is ok.

Problem is I think we've got too many in that bracket (Tilt, Byrne, Kelly) now and could do with another quality option back there.

 

That confirms to me he’s retained for cover and not for the starting main LCB.

 

Okay, definitely need another quality CB. A 1-year extension doesn't scream first choice personally.

I think he'll have a good season and will be first choice. He's probably signed a deal based more on appearances, with a lower basic, due to last years injuries. Hence only a one year deal.

A strong season and he'll hold all the cards for a better long term deal. He'll be 28 and coming upto his prime, in a years time.

GA obviously trusts him. He's played him whenever he's been fit.

 

That'll be down at the Royal Navy School of Dancing, otherwise known as Joanna's. I was more of a Boobs man in Guzz.

 

It's a great deal for the club. Solid and dependable whenever he's been called upon but if it turns out he isn't able to make the step up, we'll have no problem loaning him out to a league 2 club in January so worst case scenario it's a 6 month mistake.

 

Or because he only was involved in 50% of games last season we are concerned about injuries. If he makes a certain amount this season he gets another deal. Obviously I am 2nd guessing here but that wouldn't surprise me at all

 

Not sure Ricky. I’m leaning towards him being one of the six or seven available centrebacks in the squad but certainly not as a starter. We shall see. You are right injuries are a big worry.

 

A one year deal is a bit odd.

Does it mean they couldn't agree terms on a longer deal? Means the club has doubts about his ability to step up probably (although GA says otherwise in the press release but I suppose he cant say any different!)

If he does well then he's in a strong negotiating position.

 

Kelly will be alright I am more concerned about Richards stalling on new contract. Probably because he will have been offered a short deal because of his injuries

The club were probably concerned about the two injuries last season. It wouldn't surprise me if we offered a deal based more on appearances than basic. I think we tried to do the same with Jamie Walker, 12 months ago.

Definitely. GA said as much in the T&A recently.

 

Gives both player and club a chance to see if the player can cut at this level. Incentive now with Kelly to impress either Bradford another potential employer.

 

I like Kelly.

He's a 'proper' defender. I admit he's not the most elegant, but he's a unit and puts his head on the line when needed. I accept there's a question over stepping up and injuries too but I think when he plays he'll be solid. I have much more faith in Kelly than Byrne for example.
