Smallwood Has Left The Building

One has spent the last 2 years on holiday while the other has been playing every minute of every game. That’s surely just as relevant as age. If Power can come in off the back of the last 2 seasons and play 90 minutes, 43 times for us then fair play.

 

York would be my bet. They throw the cash around.

Can’t see Carlisle happening. Hughes and Smallwood fell out towards the end.

 

Power isn't even his replacement, they will need to bring another one in now. Power had a bad injury recently but he is 3 years younger (sorry I said 4 earlier) and has only played 12 less games in his career.

Like I said, Power got a 2 year deal aged 31, Smallwood got a 3 year deal aged 31.

 

Oh 100%. I wouldn't be surprised if we see him holding another clubs shirt up by the end of the day and this is a timing thing, getting the leaving message out first.

 

I think the club wanted to keep him, well they obviously did as he would have been released, but only on their terms offered. Too far apart, and Smallwood thinks he is worth more and has decided to depart to get that deal. His agent was probably waving a contract offer from the clubs you mentioned under Sharpes nose and wanting parity.

Reality is Smallwood is worth more to teams Like Carlisle, York, etc.

Our budget will be one of the smallest and we need to spend it wisely and Smallwood is not worth £5000+ a week, especially in another 12 months time

Pleased to see the ITK's were right and see Richie sign that 2 year deal...

Anyway, seems like after initial discussions with Richie, the club didn't feel his demands were worth it. We can all say it is good or bad business, but the proof in the pudding etc. we will just have to wait and see. It could be a master stroke, but if we are struggling next season, this will be a talking point.

It's all semantics.

He wasn't offered a renewal, formally.

But what would have happened is the club had discussions with his agent and suggested numbers, his agent suggested numbers and the club realised that the gap was too large and wouldn't be bridged and therefore didn't formally write to him with an offer of renewal.

Doesn't mean discussions didn't happen but he's probably right that a formal offer in writing wasn't made also.

All pure semantics really.

 

Huddersfield would only add another 15-20 mins to his journey.

It’s a shame that us fans never get to know the details around these things
If Richie was on £3 to £4k and we have offered £5k which seems realistic and reasonable given promotion, pay rise etc and we are too far apart
It would be interesting to see what was asked for

 

There is a lad called Charlie Wyke who'll be making that trip daily from a similar starting point. Embleton lives that way out too unless he's moved in the last year or two.

 

Just like Stockport let Sarc go and have kicked on, we need to be ruthless too and maximise our budget with the best players bang for buck.

the fact is no one knows what sort of wages smallwood wanted, and L1 will be a big step up, no one is irreplaceable.

 

Seems popular with the other players and being their captain for so long it will be interesting to see who GA gives the captains arm band to. It was clear the games that Smallwood missed that there want really a ready made replacement. A difficult role to replace when the players have bought into a Captain who never really missed a game.

I have a feeling had Sharpe not been here, we’d have offered him a 3 year deal + 1 in his favour. Sharpe to me is the iceman we needed for so long. He doesn’t show emotion and is very calculated in everything he says. There’s no room for sentiment if we want to progress. As well as Smallwood did last season, it was the only one of 3 seasons at the club. I think he may well have gone at the end of last season had he not activated the final year that was in his favour.
