Is it really that bad?

Totally agree-it's all about getting out of this horrible league and somehow despite all the issues of the last few weeks we just have to win one game of football to do it!
That said, curiosity got the better of me and I looked up the 1981-2 League table. We went up in 2nd place with 91 points. There were no play offs in those days, and Bournemouth went up in 4th place with 88. Peterborough missed out in 5th place with 82, which in this seasons league would have seen them challenging for the title!
As you say though if we do get over the line on Sat, nobody will care come mid June when the fixtures come out.

 

It is hard to compare league positions and points with previous historic league. The football was completely different. The difference between the best and the rest was marked. Last year was the same where huge investment won the day. This year although unusual is any team can beat another team. Teams had to go on a sustained run in order to get to the top, but found it difficult to stay there. Doncaster timed theirs beautifully but I doubt they had control of that.

 

Very true - as I said, purely curiosity on my part. I seem to recall Millwall doing similar in our "nearly season" of 87/88 where they came with a late run to win the league, after we'd done the double over them and Middlesbrough.

 

Every game since Swindon, I've had to pick my chin off the floor and then usually Walsall have helped lift it back up again.

With a bit of perspective though, if you have offered us the chance to guarantee promotion with a win on the last game I think most would have bitten your hand off, lets not forget how low moral has been at the club for these last 6-7 years and I very much include myself in the negative category. To get 20k+ gates for the last 4 home games of the season has never happened as far as I'm aware and a sell out to end on at full price. Forget the days of people only attending because it is cheap, we are evolving and growing and even at bigger prices next season, if we are in league 1, we could be averaging over 18k and have multiple gates over 20k. No offence to some on here, but those of a certain vintage will know better than I that you'd have been committed to the funny farm had you predicted that once upon a time.

Now come on City, just get 3 points at all costs on Saturday and we will worry about the rest in the summer.

5000 was a good attendance
I was one of those stood on the kop with large gaps of broken concrete between us
The cheap tickets have really helped to build that fan base
I love the fact , we as a fourth division club, that has had very little success over the years can pull crowds like this

 

Let's not forget James Mason who started the cheap St's.

 

At the start of the season or even after the Notts County game in December I think you're right, most would have bitten your hand off for the chance of autos on the last day of the season. However, had you asked on the 12th April prior to the Swindon game when we were top of the league with 5 games to go, I don't think you'd have had many takers because we'd all started to believe we could actually go up as champions. What a set of daft buggers we are.
