I have just watched the shephard red a couple more times and it seems no Newport player claimed for a card and even the player supposedly fouled didn't seem to complain that much.

He's gesturing that he's off as soon as he's seen the incident. There's only two players in the image when the ref delivers his decision and he's already gestured that he's sending him off, they don't need to appeal.

The ref doesn't get the red out straight away it's only when goes near shephard does he pull out the red. I actually think it's the lino who suggests it a red

He's pointing to the tunnel. He's telling him he's sending him off.

Precisely . Add to that the pressure from being surrounded by opposition players wanting him “punished” and then the crowd giving it “ off” “off”. .
He didn’t consult with the linesman from my observations?
Anyway it’s done now, we were affected by the referees instinct , it’s all very clear .;)

Tough one isn't it. I've seen loads of yellows given for the exact same scenario but also seen plenty of reds. I think it's one of them you just have to accept the refs call, take on the chin and dig in which to be fair the team did so I've nothing but praise for them.

Please look at the lower image in #453 . The referee must be at least 50yards BEHIND the incident , he’s NOT even showing in the screenshot . How can he check Huntingdons position from there ?The upper screenshot just marginally shows him appearing on the scene after the coming together, WELL BEHIND PLAY.

What’s the reasoning behind your comment if he’s not even seen in the televised image?

I hadn’t spotted that yesterday which further adds to the decision making process fallibility.

    Interesting debate for sure.

Is “pointing to the tunnel” a recognised signal from a linesman …?

You mean the referee? Yes, when they are confident and want to make a decisive decision you often see them gesturing before the card comes out. The ref is pointing to the tunnel straight away. As for your point about the referees distance, unfortunately he was close enough to see that Huntingdon wasn't going to cover. It wasn't a difficult call.

I think that's the point that some are failing to grasp.

The ruling is denial of a goalscoring OPPORTUNITY, not the denial of a goal.

Honestly some City fans deck me ...........i have been one of the biggest moaning twats regarding the team this season but to moan at that yesterday you clearly are a wum.

I actually thought it was a red but other decision beyond that seemed very bizzare but what do you thinks gonna happen when they kept get it right at the top level with the aid of technology :(

So anywhere on the park then?

You have to as a ref take everything into the equation. As I said in my previous contribution, the ref is miles behind and couldn’t have seen anything, the linesman put his flag up. He did not give himself time to assess the situation in my view.
All players are aiming for an opportunity to score a goal, but obviously there are other factors. To take his opportunity, he had to have control of the football which he did not have, Huntingdon may have been able to distract him, who knows but in my view it was not a clear cut opportunity. If in doubt you give him a yellow which in my view would have been a fair decision. You also have to look at his decision making throughout the game which was appalling.

I'm not sure it's classed as a goal scoring opportunity if you're in your own half to be fair but perhaps if the keeper was up for a corner and the player has an open goal to aim at then yeah, I don't see why that couldn't be interpreted as a red if the player is hauled down from behind.
