So you have to question why have him on the bench the kid isn't going to get match fit by parking his backside on the bench, I believe @Jordan said he'd not seen Mellon warming up which again makes little or no sense IMO of course.

My reply was more with regards how he caused us trouble at the Bescott Stadium when they won 2 - 1, as it turned out he never got chance to get going with his injury, but that day as an old pro he was coning the referee into giving him most of the challenges even coming over to us when the lino gave a throw to them when a blind man could see it was our throw and smiled whilst winking at us, a lot to be said for a guy who can buy you free kicks with Walsalls record for scoring from 15 of them this season @Kevin1954 posted, not a bad haul from gifts.

Which makes it even more frustrating that he picked Mellon on the bench if he was not happy to give him the 20 or so minutes he gave Tommy Leigh, but after a display like today Alexander got it bang on even their fans were saying we were the better of the two teams.

I agree in a way.

However, if were struggling he'd obviously throw him in on but only part of say a 4 man sub, like he did against Donny.

Like he did with Pointon, I like the way GA tends to nurture the players who have a lack of experience. It would be very easy to throw them in, because some us fans want that.

I think we'll see Mellon and when he does he'll be able to perform at his maximum.

 

I'm not disagreeing but unless he gets game time off the bench as he isn't going to get a start without Kavanagh being injured just how will he get match fit, as you know these's training pitch fitness but that's far from match fitness.

Maybe getting him integrated into the squad and used to the match day atmosphere so that part isn’t new when he’s fully fit.

Per the discussion though, cannot imagine he’s not capable of playing 20-30mins, or else indeed why have him on the bench

 

Cav isn't the tallest but he did really well in the air today and was a constant nuisance.

 

Agree. He was a handful indeed. I was watching him and off the ball he shoulder barged Halliday out of the way at one point just before he got injured. What a unit he is. Though I did think when he was closing down he was running a little awkwardly-possibly playing with an injury out of desperation? Anyway once he went off they were pretty toothless up front.

 

Cook would make this team, playing this well, even better.

 

agreed, he doesn't usually win the high ball but he is giving the defender a hard time going for it and they are often heading it back to our midfielders - tactics perhaps.

When you think he is only 21, Kav is playing with a lot of maturity.

 

If he can't run around and harass the defenders like Kavanagh and Leigh did then he won't play unfortunately

I did see Mellon out on the touchline with Leigh. They were right in front of me.

 

Never in a million years was that a sending off! He swung his leg with his other leg planted. Didn’t connect with Halliday who saw the tackle coming and jumped it. Cynical foul born out of frustration, but no vicious intent or serious foul play. Yellow card correct.

 

Looked shocking from where we were sat in the main stand - and Halliday was down for quite a while.
However if what you have seen on the TV, maybe your view was better than ours, everybody around us thought the same though.
