A look at the three teams promoted last season automatically from league 2 shows all three currently have more points than we do despite being now a division above. The fact these well run clubs are no longer in our division meaning a far weaker league yet we still can't make inroads into the top three and we look way off a team of the calibre to worry the top three.
Frustrating but i guess not unexpected.

    It’s all about money.

    We don’t have any.

    Rupp doesn’t care.

It's a fair point. Even when the injured players were available its not like we've ever looked a team capable of automatic promotion. Bar Cooky i don't think i've been impressed that much by any other player to a point where they not replaceable with better.

Imagine this set of players getting into league 1? We’d be absolutely battered every week. The squad would need some serious investment which wouldn’t be forthcoming. Promotion is pointless until we get new ownership and someone capable of doing the day to day.

Since the McCall nearly season we've been consistent with poor recruitment, ill-judged contracts and seemingly very little plan.

We could do with further investment, but we'd probably just give Oliver another 3 year contract and decide that we only need one genuine central midfielder and then bring in more injury-prone number 10 type players that can't all fit in the same team.

Until the recruitment team is booted out then expect the same shit for years to come :(
We aint talking millions here we are talking about recruiting the right players at the right price.

With us its either over the hill crocks
    Injury prone players
    Players fromthe NE
Or giving daft contracts to average players

Honestly it seems that they are either fooking lazy or cannot be arsed :(

I mean what is there strike rate of getting it right?
    10% ?????

I actually thought this lot would have been binned of the way Sharpe coming in .............thought itwould be a different outlook but nothing changed same old shit yet again

It's partly/largely about money, but more than that it's about competence, leadership, vision.

I won't repeat my often cited comments about how this club won't move forward under Rupp and Sparks, but I'd wager that our budget this season is comparable to most of the top 7. It's a very, very poor League 2. Our recruitment has again been shambolic - the squad is too big and diluted in terms of quality, the manager is a dinosaur and the style is awful.

Without Andy Cook, we'd likely be in the National League. I mean, 90% of the time a League's top scorer would be in the auto spots. We have the leagues consistent top scorer, and we'll end up with one failed playoff finish in what, 7 years of being in League 2? It's abject, and in any properly run club, those at the top would be held accountable. Not here though, Rupp just wants to keep the club alive and in the League.

No matter how much money we chuck at the club through season tickets, sponsorship, match day sales etc nothing will change under the present leadership they are simply not capable of turning things around
Mr Sharpe has been a big disappointment in my eyes another wage to find with no impact
More than half the teams in L1 don't have our level of support/financial opportunities Burton Stevenage Cambridge (all who have maintained their L1 status)to name but three so agree money helps greatly but is not the bee all and end all
Sick of saying we need a clear out from the top downwards impossible until Mr Rupp wakes up and smells the coffee
We are a mid table L2 club at best (surviving and not going bust) for the foreseeable
My hopes of promotion at the start of a new season have gradually changed to a fear of relegation either option is likely
Predictable on and off the pitch but with a modicum of interest from any owner things would be so different

I guess we don’t know all the detail. But as far as I know the actual none footballing side of the club is apparently run reasonably well. We don’t seem to be facing financial extinction and the revenue should be sufficient to mount a serious and sustained push at promotion.

With Rupp apparently making additional funds available, then City should be one of the clubs with the highest player budget. That is where the problem lies.

The recruitment process last summer was totally underwhelming. The number of players who are injured seems disproportionate. Players who were either injured at their former club (does Callum Johnson actually exist), squad players, or past their sell by dates is depressing. Add to that our inadequate strikers (for a variety of reasons) other than Cook, then the club lacks cohesion and an ability to score.

Other clubs with seemingly fewer resources are doing better. The only club with funds that are apparently comparable who seem to be collapsing is Carlisle (some sort of lesson there).

At the moment League One seems an unobtainable dream. I agree with the view, that should we get there, the current squad would immediately seem to be relegation fodder.

That's the problem you make for yourself with poor recruitment. It means you're stuck with mediocre/injury-prone/over the hill players for at least two years, or, in our case, sometimes three. Even if by some miracle we get promoted it would need pretty huge investment in good players to keep us in league 1, and all the evidence suggests that wouldn't be forthcoming. Every single promise made to supporters has been broken, and when that is compounded by yet another manager who seems to have completely lost his way there's nothing to provide any optimism at all.

Trouble is we have an overlapping recruitment policy. Just as we have a number who reach the end of their contracts, there are others who have one or two years left on their contracts.

Striker recruitment has been very poor. A second striker(s) on at least a 1:4 ratio to support Cook is essential IMHO.

I agree that recruitment is the key. The calibre needs to be correct. Age, proneness to injury, footballing intelligence, concentration, calmness, pace, stamina, hunger to achieve are all essential prerequisites.

About the only thing I felt Edin had correct (and then the fine detail needed to be refined) was performance incentive, linked to additional bonuses. Points win prizes, and the team could benefit from being ‘smartly’ incentivised.

And therein lies the problem, if by miracle we did get promoted has Rupp the will to put a msjor investment into the team, i think all of us the know answer, no the fella seems just to be happy just plod on in this swamp of a division.

As the thread is titled “comparison” I thought it the best place to post this - we are a mere 3 points better off now than we were after the same amount of games (16) last season

To everyone else, that is not improvement or successful. To Sparks, it’s a raging achievement

Did you really have to point that out?
You do know that Sparks will "liberate" that information and use it in his next newsletter to us as living proof that we are indeed on an upward curve....;)

Can see it now. Something like, 'if we'd had those extra 3 points last season, we'd have finished in the playoffs'.

Another stat from last season, the three automatically promoted sides, Stockport, Wrexham and Mansfield had goal differences of +, 48,37 and 43 respectively. Accumulative figures that show more than one player significantly contributing to the goals for tally. We literally have Andy Cook, who without his goals would be looking at the bottom half of the table.

Yep. We scored a mere 61 goals last season. Wrexham who scored the fewest of the top three managed 89. A huge difference. We all know that goals win games, provide excitement and a feel good factor. Drab, uninspiring narrow victories, and frustrating dour draws, do not!

When results go your way the fayre on show can be somewhat forgiven to a point. Though i suspect after the last few performances, even if we had held on for three points yesterday the mood in the supporters camp may have been somewhat subdued. I'd go as far as to say at no point this season has it felt like the club is a serious contender for the autos, and it wasn't like we hadn't seen the bar being set last season by the successful teams. I was messaging my lad at university like we do every match day and he'd turned over to watch something else despite us being ahead, he said it just feels all to familiar and very dull to watch.

On a similar basis, my oldest daughter lives in San Francisco. She was a Season Ticket holder for over 20 years and started going in 1994. She gets up at 7.00 a.m. every Saturday as she has an International TV pass. We regularly exchange a few WhatsApp’s , yesterday it was the goal and a moan at the result. Two messages. I think that neatly summarises the current mood.
