Well reading the latest article in the T&A "CITY have thrown down the challenge to Olly Sanderson to bounce back from being dropped" it looks as many thought Olly was not up to what Alexander was expecting of him in resent games.

Graham Alexander said: “I spoke to him after the Harrogate game.

“We spoke about what he brought to us when he first came in and what we saw when we wanted to bring him on board.

“To be fair, he held his hand up straight away and said himself that he hadn’t been anywhere near that level in that game or probably the previous one as well.
Lets hope the lad gets his head down as IMO he looks more dangerous goal wise than Kavanagh and does his share of pulling defender away.

Yet Kavanagh still starts every game?

Fair enough, sounds like GA is trying to man manage the lad, hopefully he gets the best out of him but so far even his sub-par patch doesn't seem to have been worse than his competition.

Kavanagh needs that goal to get going, but if Sanderson takes back that spot in the meantime, so be it. Competition innit.

Still cannott understand last weeks newspaper article where alexander said he picks Kavannagh because "he runs more".

the lad never looks like scoring, couldnt it a proverbial barn door, but because he runs about a lot he gets picked.

In fairness, I thought Kav was a lot better on Saturday.

He did a lot of running and closing down defenders, he pulled into some good positions (he had a great shot saved from his cut in on the left hand side after he'd taken a good position in the left channel, he pulled out wide again away from the defenders for Cook's 2nd) and was involved in some good link up play (set up Walker's first half effort and set up Cook).

    There was a definite improvement.

It's not great man management though to air that in public. It's my biggest problem with ETH at Man Utd is that he publicly call players out, you don't do that in public especially in this day and age of social media as it ends up being an attack on the players professionalism and that can stick. It's especially bad when its selective, in your case for example Kavannagh hasn't been getting the same treatment and at United Antony wasn't (even though ETH has been forced to drop him he hasn't called him out publicly)

You keep things like this in the dressing room as there you can inspire them to try harder without calling our their professionalism which could impact their future opportunities while just being an opinion and you encourage a social media pile on

    Sure.

I don't know why GA has chosen to do that, maybe he feels Sanderson needs the additional pressure - I just don't know, maybe I'm being generous to GA there.

I like GA for his forthright views and honesty. When an uninjured player drops out of the squad and not even on the bench , there’s a reason . Mr Young springs to mind?

Yup. Young and Sanderson do have one thing in common. Nobody could understand how Kavanagh was playing ahead of them :grinning:

Sanderson was doing fine. His all-round play was effective and he looked like a player who could develop further. Always assumed he was out injured, why he’s been dropped from the squad entirely and been replaced by inferior players is baffling.

I think everyone had a bad day at the office in that Harrogate game. It seems GA really needs Kav to work, maybe in order to sell later.

100% agree. Kavanagh improved last Saturday but compared to his recent performances that wasn't really a tall ask. Had been quite excited about a player who could actually control and hold a ball up top for a change. Something here is not quite right - I suspect he's done a Jake Young to mark Mark Hughes type comment.

If players like Devante Cole can keep getting chances despite being bang (and I mean BANG) average, then another second generation player like Kav has every chance of drumming up interest beyond his ability.

But I haven't written him off yet anyway. We've seen he can be a real handful.

Sanderson can't show what he can do if he's not given the chance to come on if he's not even on the bench

Smith is better than Sanderson, Oliver, and Kavanagh but can't get a look in. Maybe he doesn't offer that build-up play or midfield involvement, but he knows where the net is. If our midfield did there job correctly consistently, then we wouldn't need to have a second striker who drops deep

I've just replied to your other post about Smith and I'm not against him being given another chance but this one suggesting "he knows where the net is", is baffling.

He's scored just 5 in 40 league appearances, mostly alongside Cook, for us and only 32 in going on 200 league appearances now. That's not someone who's ever been prolific and doesn't suggest that at nearly 26 that's about to change.

Sounds like “ attitude” probably in training.? I’m speculating here btw. GA said he picks players who “ train” . JY was a notorious lazy trainer according to several accounts?

Is he twaddle. ( Putting it nicely) . He’s only performed with any regularity against kids and against adults he’s far too lightweight and struggles with mobility from my observations.

Smith is the sort of player.you look and think should be good but then can't work out why. Has no stand out features to his game .
