Oliver's Scoring Prowess (with Poll)

Discussion in 'City Talk' started by JonButterfield, Jul 24, 2024.

Oliver

  1. Oliver? Perhaps Kane/Greaves/Rooney/Charlton/Lineker in disguise. Goals galore

  2. Now a cemented Garden Gnome will score more (or not)

  3. I am a weathervane not sure, he could score or not (at confused.com)

For context, he got nine assists in the league across the two seasons.

Cook has got sixteen across the last two seasons, albeit at a lower level.

It's more the fact that the Oliver L1 goal return, or lack of, is brought up by yourself, as to say Oliver can still perform like it now or has done it since. It's been a while since he had his good season and hasn't performed in a fair few years.

The fact is, Vadaine Olivers form was that long ago it's not at all something that can be used to judge what he can bring to the table in 24/25. In his one good season for Gillingham, strikers like Luke Jephcott, Matty Taylor and John Marquis all scored similar L1 goals... but nobody on here would be happy signing any of them now, just because they scored goals in 2021 and none of them, like Oliver, have managed to find form since that behind closed doors season.

What if it was a striker who had scored 16 in 25 games?

    Yeah right.

Like we could ever attract a player with those numbers.

Isn't there already an Oliver appreciation thread? Why do we have to go over the same argument and counter argument again and again. Just accept that you all have a different opinion and move on.

That’s not the argument though I am certainly not defending his record with us. What I am saying is at the time of signing his record in the two previous seasons was very good and the signing looked like a good one at that time

Fantastic poll options, obviously took 1st option simply because it’s a belter.

If you take into account that his best season happened when Gillingham were using wingers and that Gills fans themselves were saying he was absolutely crap when they stopped using them then no it wasn't a good signing at the time. Given we weren't playing with wingers.

At least Ashley (over the bar) Ward used to get a shot away
Seldom on target but the intent was there
No hope for Oliver conference North standard at best

Also, his only "great" season of his career was in the behind closed doors season. There's a few striker whos did well that season and haven't really done a thing since, but managed to find work for a few years after.

Oliver was a system striker, who only perform really well infront to a crowd of ball boys. His time has well and truly passed him by. Even if we suddenly played 442 with attacking wingers, he's not the answer to any question at this level anymore at this stage of his career.

Just reading WOAP, this was the 34th time he’s come off the bench in the league for City since signing in 2022 – he’s only scored once as a Bantams sub.
Got a feeling "Bring Oliver on" will be a joke for years to come whenever we're chasing a game!

Makes Aaron McLean look like a real goal machine during his time at City!

And yet there's still people on here desperate to ridicule Jake Young despite him playing a division higher.

"Those in glass houses" should be a phrase that all City fans should use to temper themselves most of the time.

Jake Young is no better than Oliver.

Just like Oliver, yet to score for Stevenage.

Young had his purple patch over a 6 month period at Swindon. He has been a flop everywhere else.

It is criminal though that we didn't strengthen up front other than a young loanee who is going to be inconsistent to say the least.

Jake young can run a bit and hit a decent shot. That's already light years above anything we've seen from Oliver.

Just two back it up though, Jake Young scored 4 goals in 18 appearances for us. Vadaine Oliver just 6 in 84.

I know who I'd rather have out of the two and not only that, I'd also have Young over Smith, Kavanagh and right now Sanderson too.

Correct me if I am wrong, but the last time Jake Young scored was on 28/11/2024 against relegation doomed Accrington?

I accept he has been injured, but he has played a part in 14 games for Swindon, City and Stevenage since then……but hasn’t scored a single goal.

Agree we should have brought someone in, who was a steady, if unspectacular scorer. Who knows they may then have had a ‘purple patch with us’!
