Wages are definitely part of FFP I believe. They're all rolled up into one ball of "employee benefits" along with bonuses and most likely any cars or houses that are in the expenditure column.

When I read the comment about being on the FFP limit, I was surprised so I checked what Sparks had said last year. He quoted the club's income as £8.3million for last season. And then also said that our playing budget was £2,8mill. (He also said there were a number of clubs whose playijg budget was £4mill or more). The form of FFP used in Div 2 allows clubs to spend upto 55% of their expected 'normal' income plus 100% of what's called 'fortune' income which is essentially Cup runs and some other unexpected things on the playing budget which is mainly players wages Inc bonuses and benefits. Doing the sums suggests our FFP limit was at least £4.3mill last season. That limit was just over 50% more than last season's playing budget per Sparks. We therefore had significant headroom last season and could have spent much more without breaching the FFP limit. T

If we really are now close to the FFP limit for the coming season, things must have changed significantly. For example, has our income fallen dramatically? I very much doubt that given for example the success of ST sales or the new commercial contracts. Or has our playing budget been increased significantly? Maybe the squad has secretly increased in size or new deals for Pointon or Halliday are exceptionally generous or we've negotiated eye watering packages with the likes of Byrne and Baldwin! But whatever has changed, something just doesn't add up. It would be good to hear from the club about this but I'm not holding my breath

Are you referring to the lad we were linked with some time ago, then it went quiet and now seems back on?

If so, GA said he picked up a niggle so wanted to see how he recovered this week and next week before deciding to take him since it's a position we don't really need at present.

Of course that’s what it meant as I pointed out yesterday. Nobody would think otherwise……..oh?

Didn't Hughes have the final say on transfers, thereby expecting him to be part of his squad for the next 3 years?

Fair enough. Assuming this deal is already factoring into our FFP worries? It would be weird to say we are OK to sign a guy and then 24 hours later say we are spent up.

Why are we fussed about FFP anyway in day to day activity? How many PL and CC randomly don’t give one about such rules and then spend the next 10 years arguing the toss with football authorities?

I was of course being cynical.:alien:

Just like Young. A few short weeks ago he was like a new signing, now it appears his days are numbered.

If we have 24 players on £3000 per week £156,000 per annum or £3.7 million for the whole squad and our turnover was £8.3 million, that's £4.1 MILLION, for the playing budget at the 50%
Even though we have sold less season tickets, they did have a 25% increase, so at least an extra £300k in revenue from these sales.
Something does not add up to me, unless the players are on large bonus payments for not acheiving promotion , or Hughes was on such a vast salary, its draining resources to pay him out.

I heard that our FFP issue is because we are paying the "Goal Machine" that is Vadaine Oliver around £50,000 per week based on his exceptionally average season in 21/22 with Gillingham.

Large bonus for not achieving promotion. That's most definitely a "Bantam Thing".

It would be good to know, if he really can not be arsed in training, he did admit he does not like it.
I find it a bit strange. If i was a professional footballer, i would be busting a gut to prove my worth in the match day squad.
Even if it was for Leeds United. After all its only a few hours a day, they are not tied to a machine from 8 till 5, 5 days a week for a few hundred quid.
I suppose we will never know.
Its time for a parting of the ways, its not as if he has ever shown very much for us and will probably go next summer anyhow, so lets cash in while we can.

Wonder if he could be arsed at Swindon or where methods conducive to his style? I suppose, different clubs, different styles potentially?

If he can't be "arsed" than his ethos doesn't work with our club. For consistency, he moves on.

Or is it just attitude? I'm guessing a number of our dear readers have been employed by a company that for whatever reason doesn't work out and our full focus is not there.

Good luck to the kid when (if) he moves on.

From a 2020 data leak, the average L2 player was on just over £80,000 a year, which is roughly £1,800 per week. Inflation and I'd say we pay more than average, I'd say our average player is taking roughly £2k-£2,200k a week? Apparently Cook is our only player on more than £3k a week. Something really isn't adding up. Sparks said last seasons budget was £2.8m.

Also in January, we sold Lewis for £200k, Osadebe & East and spent a 5 figure fee on Kavanagh. Few left on loan including Oliver who'll have been on a bit and we brought Wright back in but not a chance we'd be paying a lot of his wages. There will still have been a healthy profit from that window going into some profit pile.

It gets more every time you post. By the time he leaves he will be Gillingham's record goalscorer. He scored 17 LEAGUE goals in 21/22, which is bang average for your main striker.

It's not bang average though is it? It's a decent return for a target man type forward.

For comparison, your hero James Hansons best league goals return for City was 13 and on a couple of other occasions he reached the massive total of 11 and 12.

Fantastic post and I don’t believe one bit of what the clubs is pedling around this. It’s convenient and topical in the news with Everton and Man City etc our hierarchy have such a low view of their fans and our intelligence that they say FFP and we should all go ohh that’s serious and that’s why we haven’t done the business we all were all promised.

Hierarchy think all fans are knuckle dragging mutants but as Denis perfectly articulates some fans have Rupp and co’s cards marked.
