That's exactly what it is although in modern terms they are more "8s" that also have defensive responsibilities rather than just staying advanced and finding holes to receive it.

 

He's been involved in pre-season too. He didn't end the season in the Cheltenham side too often, but they were fighting for every point and looks like they were trying system tweaks most games. Wonder if Clarke tried older heads or more attacking line ups and used their players rather than loans? Either way, their fans thought he was pretty decent. Said yesterday, but he mainly played in the middle of the back 3, but is left footed.

 

Sounds like a solid signing and if he's playing central it'll be the end of Stubbs who I imagine might now be made available.

We would need another if Stubbs goes though.

 

Not sure….. central defenders we have Byrne, Kelly, Baldwin, Stubbs, Shepherd, perhaps Callum Johnson (either CB or RB).

We look like we’ll play 3 at the back, and that’s 5 not including Johnson, and you have to account for injuries, suspensions, loss of form etc. I think Stubbs will stay.

My Barnsley mate rates him. He says he's left footed but can play CB.

Baldwin, Byrne and Kelly will be the three to begin with I think, with Stubbs and/or Shepherd on the bench. Think Shepherd will play cup games to begin with to see how he gets on.

I don't think he will drop Kelly - he's been pretty much ever present

 

I agree and I'd play him centrally, I still think he's our best defender but I just don't think GA rates him. Playing him right of a three on Tuesday completely sold him out and pretty much confirmed it I think.

 

I agree we don't have the numbers to not replace him, I just think he's way down the list and won't be happy with that. I can see GA being happy to replace him if they get an offer.

Kelly massively underrated by our support.

 

He's definitely rated, Jack signed a new two year. deal with an option of another year with the Tykes before they agreed a loan move.

 

I think he is massively over rated by some - an average L2 plodder. He woulsnt have stepped foot in Wrexham, Stockport or Mansfield starting 11 last season.

And at a glance, Carlisle, Port Vales or MK Dons this season. On paper anyway...

Im saying Halliday, Walker, Pattison, Pointon, Cook would have a chance, majority on bench though replacing Atkinson, Ravenhill and Connel et al.

 

Cook definitely gets in for Hanson but apart from that, probably no one else.

Although to Caveat that, if we played our current shape then Pattison, Halliday and possibly Walker also get in with whoever we decide is our best centre half this year.

 

Except Shepherds 23 and has already played in league one. Neill Byrne is 31 and never will.
