Discussion in 'City Talk' started by JonButterfield, Jul 24, 2024.

?

Oliver

  1. Oliver? Perhaps Kane/Greaves/Rooney/Charlton/Lineker in disguise. Goals galore

  2. Now a cemented Garden Gnome will score more (or not)

  3. I am a weathervane not sure, he could score or not (at confused.com)

I think fans and supporters of football may well think that. However, we have professional scouts, recruitment teams etc., I expect much better analysis from those. Read @Jordan@Jordan analysis of strikers and what we can expect at this level once they age.

Markings are irrelevant. A blind man riding a horse can see he isn’t good enough. If he's the top earner at city that's a massive error and no wonder he isn't leaving I wouldn't either

I have no idea on whether or he's the highest earner but he will certainly be up there. However, despite his shortcomings on the pitch, he doesn't strike me as the sort of player who would be happy to just sit around and take the money. He wants to play, that much is evident from the fact GA has said it was Oliver that asked to go out on loan in January.

Use him as a backup for Cook who isn’t getting any younger!

This bit is spot on. Tried explaining this recently to 1 or 2 of the regs on here but some are just too far gone now. They will accept mediocrity and will lap up every signing and as long as we are there abouts then thats absolutely fine. 9th place finish? No probs, close enough.

It says alot we are talking about Oliver after a tap in. Forget the last 2 seasons, give him another go. We may aswell resign Ridehalgh for LWB while we are at it.

Here is my question. Would all the VO supporters sign him now? Would they sign him on much less money? I want all of them to consider our goal, that is to gain promotion from this league this season.

If only we'd have thought of that before. Maybe we should have even started him in front of Cook on the odd occasion .....

    Oh, wait ......

I'm not questioning his character or desire to do well in a city shirt just his ability. Too many people think footballers should do the "noble" thing and take a pay cut to walk away when in reality hardly anyone would, I know I wouldn't if I was him

Not easy having to take a pay cut, however some footballers do in order to continue playing football. Obviously he can stay here until his contract expires but his chances of another professional contract are seriously threatened going down that route. It is for him to decide.

He showed his ability at Gillingham for the two years before we signed him.he has never had an extended run with us and is on a big wage so if he goes all well and good but if he stays for all or part of the season playing the Way Alexander likes to play may suit him and he could prove a good squad man

The point I was making is that I'm sure he is as keen as anyone to get a deal sorted. Whether one transpires however is another matter.

If we really are serious about competing for an automatic promotion slot, we'll be looking at having to score 80+ goals this coming season, about a third more than last season. I struggle to imagine that we can do that with our current group of strikers. To do that, we need better firepower than Oliver.

The club has a choice to make. Encourage him to go elsewhere and if necessary agree to top up his wages at his new club. Or keep him at VP, continue to pay him and potentially don't register him in the first team squad if we need the capacity capacity for a replacement.

The more important question for me is how we ended up with this situation? Who the hell agreed to bring in a 31 year old striker, not known especially for his scoring rate over his career, even taking into account of his time at the Gills as their primary striker, on a three year deal? I trust we won't repeat that situation again.

Most teams at this level looking for a striker would have taken him coming after two great season at the Gills.

    Two great seasons?

The season before we signed him he scored 11. In 43 games.

    Hardly "great" was it?

Graham Alexander Appointed manager of Bradford City 6/11/2023. Oliver had two and a half months at City before moving to Stevenage. Despite that….he was shipped out.

Since Alexander was appointed he played Oliver in six league and three cup games. In all that time he scored one goal against the Liverpool under 2’s

He went to Stevenage. Different manager and team. He appeared in 14 games……he scored….ZERO goals.

The history is very clear. Apart from his single purple patch at Gillingham, his goal return varies between poor and woeful.

You keep banging on about his Gillingham form. The totality of his form over many seasons/clubs/managers is desperately poor.

Thank goodness you are not part of the judiciary and l hope you are not a magistrate, as despite evidence to the contrary the holistic picture is that Oliver had a couple of seasons when he excelled, apart from that he is exceptionally poor.

Taking out the anomaly of the Gillingham seasons, he has played 163 League games for five clubs. He has scored 15 goals. That is an average of a single goal every 11.13333333 games.

He is now two years older since the purple patch. I see zero evidence that he can replicate his two seasons at Gillingham and as a recidivist, he has reverted to type and is more likely than not to continue his bleak form at best.

Perhaps a little honesty. He is not ……the …???????

The fact is in the two previous years before signed for us he scored 31 goals in league one had 9 assists won 20 MOM a quarter of all the games based on that I don’t think anybody could deny it was a decent signing. That is all I am claiming most of his appearances for us have come in the last few minutes of games where he failed to make an impression playing Hughes ball.he only made 4 appearances for Stevenage.

Park, you seem to believe in this mythical land where Vidaine Oliver is a lower league Harry Kane. I provide you with evidence as to the games he played in for Stevenage. He made 14 appearances and scored Zilch.

To try and put it on Hughes ball, is disingenuous at best.

City played 11 games from Alexander being appointed in November 2023 until Oliver left in January. Two of games he wasn’t in the squad. For three he was on the bench. In six games he played.

Alexander had ample opportunity to assess him and was content for him to go out on loan.

He seems to be what card players call ‘a busted flush’.

Mark Hughes, Kevin MacDonald, Graham Alexander and most recently Steve Evan’s cannot get goals out of him. He seems done, a spent force.
