Oliver's Scoring Prowess (with Poll)

Discussion in 'City Talk' started by JonButterfield, Jul 24, 2024.

?

Oliver

  1. Oliver? Perhaps Kane/Greaves/Rooney/Charlton/Lineker in disguise. Goals galore

  2. Now a cemented Garden Gnome will score more (or not)

  3. I am a weathervane not sure, he could score or not (at confused.com)

Over 2 years ago and didnt manage it with Stevenage last season. He is 32 now.

Ive seen enough of him in a City shirt to realise by now he is absolutely SHITE.

He's approaching 33 years old and his prime years are done. We shouldnt be looking at his past and thinking he can still do it now. In the 3 seasons since he last scored double figures, Oliver has played in all competitions 103 games, 61 of those he starts, he finished 38 of those and he has scored 15 times with 5 assists too. His last league goal was Jan 1st 2023. He's completed 90 minutes in all comps just 4 times since April 2022.

His last decent scoring spell was around 27/28/29 years of age which tends to be the prime for a striker more often than not. I think we just signed a guy after his purple patch and then was on the decline. Now will struggle to offer anything more for us than a bench rotational option. Poor recruitment to give the lad the length of deal we did.

Oliver's main problem is he doesn't start and isn't an impact player who can blitz a defence at high intensity for 15 minutes.

And he's not likely to start now either.

But if he was starting regularly there is nothing to suggest he wouldn't do a job.

TBF though he got his chance when Cook was rested/out of sorts and did absolutely nothing to suggest he should be a regular starter. He got starts at at Stevenage and again did nothing.

Im not fooled by his tap in last night against some Austrian kids.

Will probably end up in the Conference League by the end of the year
His chances with us are severely limited and his recent record will scupper any chances
he may have of signing for another L2 side
Good luck to the lad an expensive move for us and a wrong career move for him
File within the Sparks and Gent error file

I think it was a great career move for him - financially anyway. He obviously had interest elsewhere and Hughes really wanted him, so the lure of that 3rd year, guaranteed salary, was probably his bargaining chip. He got it.

We are just keeping him fit for moving him on.
Don't let a goal against a semi pro side or the fact he's on our pre season tour make you think anything else.

You have to add that he hasn’t only failed with City, but also at Stevenage, where he spent the end of last season, made 14 appearances and scored ZERO goals!

27 league goals we can knock of the appearances as well if you like. You can argue about history and the fact he hasn’t done it for us but without doubt he did very well for the two years prior to joining us and anyone looking at his stats would have said good excellent signing

You're right, but it's an unpopular opinion apparently.

27 goals in two seasons is 13/14 a season. That's not bad if you have someone else in the team getting 20+. If the other player is only getting 10+ then they're playing in a mid-table team considering 65-80 goals need to be scored to get into the play offs probably.

Not much hope for Young then did nothing for us and Barrow and yet he is a half million player.

Young is a totally different prospect to Oliver he has proved at Swindon he has goals in him under the right coach and system of play you could quite easily see that, unlike Oliver's floundering performances over the last three years
I presume the half million (joke) comment is a reflection you have on Oliver's value which is comparing chalk and cheese
When your main striker scores 13/14 goals a season you are going nowhere especially as he's gone downhill ever since
Wrap him in cotton wool and see if anyone else is willing to take a chance would be my advice

I am just staggered there is thread on Oliver and his potential to the team, following him scoring a goal in a friendly against an Austrian 3rd division reserve team!
Not surprised to see our resident user fan talking him up but the simple fact is it shows up how some fans have come to accept mediocrity and are totally oblivious that this just highlights we are no further to progressing than in the previous 6 dire seasons, and despite the paper promises the club has made to the fans.
Oliver is NOT going to drive us forward, he is here on a bloated contract because of the incompetence of the people who gave it to him, and who are still at our club.
I still live in hope that there is going to be some smart and slightly more dynamic business to be done before the window closes, as its hard to be over enthused by what has happened to date. Sorry to be a bit pessimistic but only actions interest me, we had enough bluster and words to last a lifetime

Young did something only last season, and he is 10 years younger.

PS - Young has 4 in 17 for City and Oliver has 5 in 46.

    Talking nonsense yet again fella.

Spot on. Ive been saying it for a long time, some fans are so far removed from reality by this current regime, they will accept dogshit if you put a claret and amber rosette on.

Im staggered we are even talking about Oliver and his potential...based on 5 goals in 46 ganes for us, terrible spell at Stevenage only a few months ago and a few goals in L1 2 years back. Oh and aged 33 and unwanted by our current manager.
