James Hanson came from non.league, as did Ian Ormondroyd

Squad players does seem to be order of the day under our present manger unfortunately we are stuck with this philosophy.
Having said that I've never subscribed to the big crowd ethos either it doesn't entice better players to join, it will always be about the money at the end of the day.

Probably the exception rather than the rule but Crawley did it last season with no name non league players who gelled as a team

Kelly got into forward positions quite a lot last season, and even got an assist in one game with a cross into the box (I forget the game).

Indeed they did. Their approach wasn't simply to spot non-league players who might make it in a higher league. They adopted a very different approach from most other lower league teams. It's based on the player's stats, similar to how Brentford have been doing it for several seasons now itself based on a stats based approach used in MLB in the US. This allowed them to identify a few NL players who had previously slipped under the radar and it's proved successful. It wasn't simply a case of using a conventional scouting approach and it's worked for them. No doubt it was also helped by a good manager who created a team rather than a set of individuals.

Absolutely they did Guisely and Thackley if memory serves me right
2 success stories among how many failures tho
I presume every player played non league along the way at some point a starting and finishing point to a career
Don't get me wrong I hope should we sign him he's a success
After promises of investment, strong budget, building a "promotion ready team" to survive in L1 etc etc
It leaves me a tad underwhelmed

The quality in L2 is shite and City certainly have enough to get promoted. I think the frustration with some fans is our transfer business is far from ambitious and isnt giving us that greater chance of success.

I/we expected more intent this window. Our CB business has been nothing short of underwhelming and a little bit worrying.

I have read so many comments on here about useless signings by contributors who have never seen them play in a City team managed by Graham Alexander .
I wonder what they said when we signed a young Bermudan lad who had been rejected by Carlisle?

Byrne and Baldwin appear to be almost in the first 11. Then there's Stubbs and Kelly. If we're playing 3 at the back then we have 4 "main" central defenders. Anyone else is filling in. If there's an injury like Walker or Pattison got to our centre backs then we're very thin and probably inexperienced in terms of centre back experience.

Yeah cos every unknown signing turns out to be a Nahki Wells. I've nothing against the club scouring the lower leagues for players but by general rule of thumb 23 year olds getting a gig a Fylde very rarely turn out to be Nahki Wells type players.

I think we had the basis of a decent enough team at the end of last season, was hoping to supplement that with some quality but like you slightly underwhelmed.

For every Wells, there have been 10-20 of absolute shite - that raised concerns at the time and left us all vindicated after.

Its telling you are using a signing from 13 years ago to support your point.

I have to agree with the above assessments, based on the history of the new signings. None of them are a 21 year old, potential hidden gem.

Byrne is 31 arguably entering the autumn of his career. Baldwin although 27, has little league experience and although ‘exciting’ on occasion, is apparently prone to significant ‘gaffs’. Johnson in 18 months at Mansfield, seems to have made 30 appearances, so in/out of the team. Sarcevic is arguably a positive addition, but he is now 32, can he repeat his performance of last season?

l struggle to see any investment in the squad.

With Platt, Chapman, Ridehalgh, Hendrie, Derbyshire, and a number of younger players going, then at best it is ‘like for like’.

So I am underwhelmed by the transfer business. I really hope that my feelings of concern are unfounded, and that this season, is the one. Time will tell.

    Where have you seen this?
Sharpe said that the defender who we’re targeting is a loan.

Harsh, maybe the majority don't buy into anything, and they are happy to support the players who wear the shirt, if I jacked in every time my hopes were dashed with regards Bradford City I'd have given up many years ago, the ridicule I've taken over the years even BPA could take the piss when I started watching Bradford City, I hope this is our season but if not I'll be there again next season, my support for my club is not based on who owns us or what they may promise, as the saying goes CTID .

We should be signing a commanding CB with a presence that makes our current CBs, which look dodgy on paper, the backup, not signing someone to be backup
